Lack of Castrol GTX Popularity

I am a fan of GTX, and found some good UOAs from 8k-10k miles!

Once in a while in Canada, Wal-mart sells 4L of GTX for $8.88,
and that's one of the cheapest dino oil out there!

Let me know when that happens and I will stock up. It's worth it at that price IMO. If I hear of a sale or you do lets keep each other posted!

You think that is bad they sell it for $20 at Canadian Tire!

As if...

The best deal on GTX I've seen is a Pepboys sale+rebate for $1.40/qt, which would be $7 for 5 qts. And I do believe that there's a current O'Reillys running for $17 for 5 qts + filter.

These days I don't buy Castrol. But that's another topic altogether that I'm sure the mods won't appreciate anyone going into.

Usually when that happens, valvoline or QS or PYB are also on sale for $10.88 (5L instead of 4L)

So it's really not that cheap, its just a quart less than the others.

I did buy 2 jugs a couple years ago though at that price to run in my Saturn. No complaints, I like the oil.

When QS or PYB is on special nothing else matters to me in terms of deals because my money usually goes to them.

I like when CTC has the 5w50 Motomaster synthetic on special because it's good for the Cabriolet and it's usually cheap like $19/jug!

I'd pretty much agree with everyone else...still good stuff though...

The one thing I'll never forget about GTX was how fast my wife's old Neon would burn through it. It never went through any other oil that fast, even ST did better. (headgasket was on the way out)Always wondered why....

I recently got a jug at CT for around $12. I saw it recently at Walmart for $10.88, but I had already bought some PYB. I'm still in a state of shock that our oil prices are beginning to drop to American levels.

As for $15.50 for GTX, if that were the regular price for a five litre jug, I could live with that. At Canadian Tire, for more money and a litre less, we have a problem.

I do like GTX. I used it a lot in my own vehicles. The fleet got QS, and I used GTX, if only to avoid confusing my stock and the fleet stock. Both did the job nicely. Considering the regular price then was closer to $0.99 per litre, things were different.

Hate their advertising (e.g. 'Liquid engineering', gets to the top of the engine 'faster', helps engines run 'cooler', Ford recommends Castrol with pictures of a Ford Focus when Ford clearly recommends Motorcraft), it's a Group I recycled base stock here, it's expensive compared to other oils and I hate it when a brainwashed customer walks into the store and specifically asks for Castrol GTX, as if it's God's gift to the automotive world. That and the Gulf oil spill is enough reason to not buy GTX, or indeed any other BP product IMO.

Be careful, some newbies can take you seriously. Is there any way to reset your post count back to zero?

Castrol GTX sold in the Middle East is a completely different product than Castrol GTX sold in North America or Europe. So are many more international brands being pumped into this market from the UAE. Group I base stock is not at all uncommon, in fact it accounts for a majority of lubricants sold here.

It probably explains why something spec'ing a 5w-20 here gets a 10w-40 rec there.

I also have to go with the price angle. There's just no need to pay that much for a conventional oil. Anyone who perceives that they need something to handle what they depicted in those commercials, will be buying a synthetic. It was fine when M1 was just about the only serious player in the synthetic OTC market, but now

there's just too many competing for that #2 slot.

I don't understand the immature bashing of GTX.

There is nothing wrong with that oil at all and it can be had at very good prices when sales come online here and there.

If I use conventional, it is always the oil of choice for me. Never let me down and on one car I had 15 years ago I saw a 2mpg increase just switching to it and it also cleared up a lifter tick it had.

There is nothing wrong with that oil and if you bash GTX, you bash Syntec seeing they are the same company. Seeing the ridiculous posts about liking Syntec but hating GTX is just plain ridiculous. Grow up.
