I can't remember the last time I bought any Castrol/BP products.

I still buy a lot of Chevron and Shell products.

Yup, reputation from old timers is all it's got going for it anymore IMO. They've been pretty lacklustre since BP bought the brand. BPs latest really doesn't help much. Last GTX I bought was a couple years ago- one bottle of 20w50 in the dollar bin.

Someone posted a side by side comparison of a few of the major synthetics (VOA chart) that included QS HP, Syntec, Edge, and PP. AFAIK both Syntec and PP are group 3 oils, and what I found interesting was that the additives in Syntec and PP were almost identical. Other numbers were close too. More interesting was that, going by the numbers, Syntec looked objectively better than Edge.

I'm about to switch to syn, and already have the PP bought on the $19 rollback to go in. I'd have no reservations about switching to Syntec if it happened to be cheaper (I have no brand loyalty to any oil or filter).

No plans to go back to dino, though, once I make the switch, so GTX is out of consideration now for me.

I like GTX alright, but less favored as time goes by.
All the old VW camper gang seem to use it, but my old air-cooled engine is noticably quieter on QS conventional or PYB.

Castrol GTX is always pricier than Quaker State, Shell, Havoline, Mobil Clean etc. No real reason to choose Castrol GTX over those. It is a good oil though no doubt.

I had to login just to post/reply to this entry ......

Amen!

Isn't Castrol GTX owned by British Petroleum?

From what I've seen of their muddy oil spewing out of the
sea floor, I don't think I'd want that stuff in my engine.

I remember I use to use castrol gtx, and its the quiet oil I ever use on all my engine, since the price went up to $16 5quart at walmart, im stop using it, it use to be 12-13 dollar for 5 quart I think.

Hey! That's the commercial that got me interested in oil to begin with! I'll never forget the announcer's voice..."maximum protection against thermal lockdown"...as the temp gauge rose into the red and an ominous beeping sound started.

It's priced right here - at the top end of the cheap sector.Looking at low priced oils people are much more likely to buy GTX than some obviously cheap brand,or a brand they have never heard of.Castrol GTX sells itself just from the name...everyone who has heard of engine oil has heard of GTX.

I find that a lot of people love the oil, but not on this forum. The G6 forums and Chevy forums talk about Mobil 1 for synth and Castrol GTX for dino.

As others have stated its a cost thing for me. Castrol GTX is like $14-$15 dollars for a 5 qt jug and about $3.xx a quart. Valvoline White bottle is $15 for a 5qt and $3.xx a quart. Both of which are expensive, you can nab QS Synthetic for $18.50.

Best priced oil for now is Motorcraft @ $2.77 and Mobil Clean 5k @$2.77. Pennzoil and QS are a close second.

I have had poor service from GTX over the years. It has always been a top dollar convential and IME has always had a high rate of consumption in every vehicle I've tried it in. I also despise how idiots repeat what they hear on GTX commercials and repeat words like "thermal" and "breakdown".

Pre-BITOG, I got some GTX for my (sniff) first saturn as I considered it a "premium" oil that was "engineered for today's smaller cars" (their words).

Yep I remember that ad,it was very good!!

According to chart below GTX Noack just a hair above Amsoil synthetic so their commercial isn’t total [censored]. That’s telling me they use superior base stock in their GTX. Others dino oils can go pound sand

Yup! That Bearing (Engine?) Ground into the other Metal, and made myself fearful of how other Oils would let that happen to my Engine!

Ironically, i now put MMO in the oil more often than not.

I think it's a great oil and I always had great results. But I'd put Mobil Clean 5000 and Pennzoil YB 1, 2 and GTX a close 3. Problem is, it's usually more expensive. The MC5k is pretty phenominal dino though.

And yet http://www.pqiamerica.com/testresults3a.html

10W-30 vs 5W-30, but you don't typically see the 5W-30s double the NOACK score. I find the Amsoil number suspect.
