Kratom

The law that Clinton passed that allowed TV advertising of drugs has created more hypochondriacs & people believing they “need” meds is one of the most disastrous things ever. Shame on Congress. Not only are they responsible for these medical crises, nearly all of them have directly profited from the pain & suffering they caused.

Em, no, ads were always allowed with the first major one was in 1983 for ibuprofen. The only thing that kept them in check was that they needed to post every single risk factor for the drug with a mandatory disclaimer. Direct to doctor adverts were allowed if there was no mention of what the drug was for as a "remember us" thing and drugs like Motrin had few major side effects.

The FDA loosened the rules in 1997 allowing for a quick mention of only the most adverse side effects or a ticker, and Clinton was president. But the FDA Commissioner Kessler made that call that drug companies could just give us the Cliff Notes for risks, had been appointed in 1990 under HW Bush, and there was plenty of bipartisan support for the change. Feel free to remind me of any GOP outrage over major corporations swindling the US public and driving up drug prices....

There’s a slight difference between ibuprofen (which still has side effects in rare cases) as an OTC, and things like Vioxx and other recalled drugs, along with the litany of other prescription drugs that have multiplied since then to share “new diagnoses!” in the ICM and convince more people that if they just get this one new drug it will fix what’s ailing them… only to discover that in a few months, they’ll need another prescription to counteract the side effects of the wonder drug they just began taking. That’s what I was targeting.

I’m not defending either of the Bushes, as they’re at least as much in bed as Bill was with Pharma & other nefarious agencies & agendas. The floodgates of minimizing the risk while overpromising the rewards of signing up for all kinds of new medications to control real or imagined (manufactured by suggestion?) illnesses were opened under Clinton, and not closed in the time since. Iatrogenesis is real. ✌🏻

The commercials are able to get away with a lot of things by adding the phrase “ask your doctor if ****** is right for you”

A lot goes into a doctor’s decision to prescribe a medication.

Civics lesson here. Congress passes laws. Presidents sign or veto them and then administer the implementation. That's why the presidency is part of the executive branch.

People praise or blame presidents when the reality is Congress passes the laws, good or bad.
I think members of Congress like this because they really hold the power, such as the power of the purse. After all, each budget is a law passed by Congress. Presidents may make budget requests, but Congress doesn't have to go along with the request.

The more you know...

You don’t read well either do you? Yes, I used the wrong word at the start (passed vs. signed), but obviously knew how it works (Shame on Congress). And while I agree and know the rest of your post, the government is most certainly not operating as described in the first paragraph these days.

It's hard to tell, most people think presidents do everything.

How was I supposed to know you meant signed vs the word you used.
Own the mistake, don't blame others if they are unable to tell what you mean when you use the wrong word.
I read very well, I read the words and didn't assume they meant anything other than what the words mean.

If you used the wrong word, it's hard to put the blame on me for taking you at your own word.

...most people think presidents do everything.

This is a sad truth. The Presidency is more symbolic than anything else. People give the office more credit than it deserves, good or bad, while paying little attention to the local city, county, and state governments that handle many of the regulations and ordinances affecting their lives.

A couple people went on a rant in our community FB page recently when a new ordinance was passed affecting permits for new home construction and additions to existing homes. It was nothing major, even favorable IMO, but they blamed Biden for wanting to control everything. Yet, it was the county planning commission that put the ordinance together and county council that voted it into affect after 3 public hearings on the ordinance that were announced at least 15 days ahead of each hearing. They were none the wiser... had to be the President's fault. lol

Many of these same people were complaining in 2020 when a referendum for an unpopular 1% sales tax increase passed with 58% in favor. The county was outraged. On the ballot in Nov. 2020, there were options to vote straight party. A good bit of people selected straight R or D and submitted it without even looking at the candidates. Well when it came to the referendum, either Yes or No had to be selected. Selecting a certain "straight party" at the top of the ballot would auto-fill "Yes" on the referendum. A sales tax that was widely unpopular was passed by the very people most in arms against it. Guess who's fault it was?
