K&N air filter after 2.5 years pic.

I clean both AFE and AEM dry flow filters every 30K. The AEM on the Pilot seems a bit more dirty that the AFE on the Tacoma. Both see similar driving conditions.
 
Use stock filter and change at regular-normal intervals. That clogged filter has hurt your efficiency and performance for a while. That’s not money well spent…

in some aspect you are correct. I've noticed that with HVAC filters at home. for that type of filter he had, I probably would just tap it a few times and let the big stuff fall off and throw it back in. I'd kind of like to see or perform a test to see how cold the cleaning agent and the oil will get before they turn into solid. it's kind of a nuisance to clean and with dry flow filters now readily available on the market it just makes no sense that they are still making cotton guys and oil. if it had worked out so well I think they would have implement it in people's homes.

No way I would ever use a K&N filter again on any motor I want to keep long-term...just MHO. For drag racing, sure...but that fine trace of dust that gets through cannot be good.

Had one on a CBR 600 back in the day, then on my Envoy. When I saw the very thin layer of dust on the carb intake I checked the SUV. Inside the intake tract I could wipe it with my finger.

I heard they have been known for this, and I was a believer after that. Cannot imagine the very long-term effects on the rotating mass. Maybe others have had good luck but no more for me. The Green Filter is a better choice.

Boredom, mostly. I'll probably clean it soon and throw it back in.
I’m not fond of K&N but now that it is seasoned (used & dirty) its ability to filter contaminates has improved at the expense of reduced air flow. If your vehicle performance has not suffered leave it in.
Cleaning it will increase its ability to flow more cfm while allowing more contaminants to pass through.
A clean K&N is a terrible filter.
My opinion.

This exact thing happened to me on a dual side draft Webber carb set years ago. I tried different oils and filter brand to try to get rid of the micro dust hazing of my intake runners. I just went back to paper/synthetic fiber media after that, never saw the dust hazing in my intakes after the move away from oiled cloth.
 
In those applications, the air intake piping was squeaky clean downstream of the air filter. Based on this I assumed the air was clean enough it didn't have much to filter. I also find this with normal paper filters on most normal street driven cars. It takes at least 30k miles to build up visible crud in the air filter and it still doesn't look as bad as the OP's photo. Maybe I'm lucky and live in a place with unusually clean air?
32,000 miles on this factory installed one. 1st 15,000 were in Toronto, 2nd were with me as a daily commuter on country highways and weekend gravel sightseeing. To me it looks just as bad as the OP’s

Good idea to clean, and let be completely dry, then apply oil (lightly) then let that dry, then pat with rag to get residual oil off.

The oil is not good for MAF sensors.
