Just went to QSUD after dino only for 120,000mi

My dino stash finally ran out, and given the price of dinos vs syns these days it has now become less costly to run syn per mile if you run it longer which I plan to do. My 2004 Silverado 5.3 has had a steady diet of "old" Havoline (had 48qts I think at closeout) for years then went to Formula Shell for a long while when I could get it on sale for $2 or less a quart. Ran each of those for 5000mi OCI's, although I think I pushed Havoline to 6500 or so once to check TBN. Anyhow last week I put in the QSUD 10w30 and will now go solely by the GM oil life monitor (mine does not show percent - just tells you when to change and it never has). As you know GM says 1 year max if the OLM does not activate. I think I have a shot at that as I am pretty easy on the truck. I know I get to crawl around under it less so that's nice. As I have for years I will stay with my Wix 51522's and the 4 or 5 I have left in the case should last me for the rest of the truck's life with me. I will be sure to let everyone know when my engine explodes from the switch over.

Oh, well, it's not a real synthetic anyway.

KIDDING!!

Syn oil is good for better cold start and longer OCI. In warm climate like you live, the 1st benefit is no exist. If you don't mind changing oil often, use regular. I see car run regular to very higher miles. If you have sludge monster like old Toyota V6 or turbo, then do synthetic.

That's what I would do. QSUD is proven by the analysis posted here to be quality stuff. There's almost no difference in price. What do you have to lose?

P.S. is your GM oil life monitor really an oil life monitor, or is it just one of those dealies that ticks off the mileage and turns on the light after so many miles have gone past?

I love QSUD. What I love even more is not having to use a different weight on any of the cars I service [the 0W-20 does just fine on the 08 Lexus IS250 (even though they only back spec'd on the '11 and up), even better imo than the usual 5W-30 on startup noise and smoothness etc]. $20.97 for five-quart jug at walmart and they stock plenty of the 0W-20 at my local. I've taken the QSUD on the IS250 to 10k miles with no problems, mostly freeway miles however. I don't foresee any issues with you switching to QSUD even at your mileage considering your regularity of changes with conventional.

Hopefully you will not experience any oil leaks. Although it is not common, there is a slight chance that you may experience some due to the switch.

Yes it is. I mean it uses the same GM algorithm, which has always "counted down" from what I understand, that the fancier ones use that show the percentage. I just don't have those buttons on my wheel so it can't do that.

I knew I would get a leak comment. From my time here I think that is a myth. We will see.

Update! My OLM just went off this morning at just under 126,000mi so that is 6000 miles on the QSUD per the OLM. I never had the OLM activate before as I always ran dino for 5k or so for 120,000mi. Maybe it was the summer heat here (FL), I did tow a jet ski a short distance and mostly city driving but I thought it was going to go longer than that! Hardly makes it worth the cost of synthetic. Maybe I will go 1 more time with QSUD and the OLM and see if I get any further. I am supposed to change it within 600mi. Oil usage was certainly up with the QSUD. Still no leaks (ha). Thoughts?

I don't see the specifics on your vehicle other than it's a GM product. It is probably assuming bulk dino oil in it's calculations, a UOA will likely prove you can go much longer.

Yeah, the OLM doesn't know you switched to synthetic. Even at 8000 miles synthetic to 5000 miles dino I'd pay double the price not to have crawl under it so often. When you get older, time and aggravation have more value than a few dollars.
