So I recently picked up my Mazdaspeed 3 and am well versed in the fuel dilution issues with direct injection engines from reading threads here and in some other forums.

I'm planning on an initial oil change at 1000 miles another at 2500 and a switch to synthetic at 5000 miles.

I'm looking into Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 or Redline 5w30. Which is better at preventing fuel dilution? Little background on my driving style. I'm hard on cars, I'll probably do 1-2 track days a year and I often make a lot of shorter trips during the week. So which one of these oils should I go with or should I try both and do an analysis on both?
Thanks
Mike

to BITOG. Amsoil does not make the Series 2000 anymore. Their replacement is the Signature Series 0W30 and it show to be a very good oil. I believe I would try that one first over the Red Line.

how long of drain intervals you gonna go?
amsoil is good, redline gets pretty good reviews here (better than the other colored oil on here) pennzoil platinum is good as well

Honestly no set drain interval but I'd like to be able to get 5k out of it but it really depends on the analysis and the fuel dilution numbers

any dino will get you 5K but i understand your concerns with the fuel dilution issues. cant remember if it was PP that handled fuel dilution better than others or another one. honestly cant remember

If the RLI did so well in the DI Audi engines, perhaps there is a thinner variant that will be OK for use in your mazda, and handle things equally well.

Apparently in the Audi DI engines, the amsoil outperformed other high end syn oils when it came to that. Granted, that was a 5w-40 so its apples to oranges.

Did you just recommend a dino for a fuel diluting turbo charged application? Isn't that a bit gutsy?

Search for RI_RS4's thread on 5w-40 RLI and the comments on fuel dilution and the caution about lab results with possible problems reading fuel dilution by inferring it from the flash point.

By the way you have a great car. I've driven several of the Mazda's and like them. One of the guys in the shop bought one for his wife. After the RI_RS4 thread he is using RLI's Biosyn oil and their gas additive. And he runs Red Line in the transmission but plans to switch to RLI transmission lube.

i did but also understand his fuel dilution issues. he said he will be doing 5K intervals and mentioned a dino will get him 5K intervals. he can also do dino and change out more often if the fuel is really that big of an issue.

I'm linking what I've read so far about the RLI oil. I'm leaning towards trying them out to see how they are. My next question would be should I wait till 5k to switch to the RLI bio-syn or make that switch at 1,000 miles?
Thanks
Mike

What does the owner's manual state? many makes now have a reccomendation to keep the factory fill for some duration. THis has been discussed many times, and the general idea is that this is a good idea, considering modern manufacturing practices.

So, if your owner's manual states to keep the fill in for n thousand miles, do so. If not, Id likely say keep it in for 1000 all the same, then change it with dino for another 500-1000, then swap to syn at a shorter than recomended interval, then go normal or beyond.

Why would you make a recommendation if you don't "remember"? These kind of things confuse people who are looking for real answers. Please don't post just to post.

The manual mentions nothing about how long to keep the factory fill in. Just the break in is 600 miles but even that is very vague as it says high engine speeds are ok for short periods of time.

I changed my 07 Speed 6 out at 1K and from the UOA it was def needed. The PP is thinning just like the other mineral and syn 30 wts, but havent seen anything on RLI yet. If I cant get the fuel dilution issue under control with the GC I have in it now or the Rotella T syn 5w40 (Wally world store manager sold me 28 quarts at a per unit cost of 1.50$ bc he thought he was unloading the old stuff) I may just head to RLI and bypass playing with Amsoil or Schaeffers.

RLI has proven affective in fuel dilution here so if you want to avoid the tinkering just put in their 5w40 at 1000 miles and be done with it.

"I'm planning on an initial oil change at 1000 miles another at 2500 and a switch to synthetic at 5000 miles."

Switch to synthetic at 5000? I tend to think the 08.5 Speed3 Sport I have parked out front now has synthetic in it as factory fill.
I do not plan on using dino at any time. This engine runs way to hot for dino!!
I will just be using my GC stash for the next few short OCI's.
After that, who knows? PP from WW at less than $20/5qt sounds good.
Take Care......Great car!

Dang..The brakes on this thing are bigger than some light trucks!!

Well I think I'm just going to go with the RLI at 1,000 miles so I guess I'll be ordering some up along with a new filter.

As for what's in it from the factory I don't think it's synthetic but you never know. I agree though that any turbocharged car should be coming with the good stuff from the factory though.
