A while back I posted that I was mattress shopping. We spent the better part of a day going to various showrooms and trying out different mattresses...MANY, MANY MATTRESSES. We did end up finding one that we both liked but it was more than I could justify spending. We went home empty handed and I've been doing research on and off since then and have found that pretty much anything in a showroom (Mattress Firm, JCPenny, Sears etc.) is overpriced and not the best quality. For instance my current mattress was purchased only 6 years ago, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being low tier and 10 being high tier I would say its a 7. It was a pretty penny. Now 6 years later its pretty spent, it offers little support and I often feel my pressure points. Side note, I really dislike the shopping experience as these people work off commission and are hovering around you the whole time. It was very unpleasant.

So after all of that I started looking at online options, and narrowed it down to Ghostbed. This is in the class of mattresses that are delivered to your door in a box and "inflate" when opened. It had solid reviews and had a great warranty, I was really considering biting the bullet today but wanted to do some more research one last time. I am glad I did! I came across Tuft & Needle, I had heard of this company before but never gave them a second glance. Upon further review they have excellent ratings and the price is fantastic! I was chatting with one of their employees who shared their business model and I instantly fell in love with the company, they are very customer centered in everything they do.

So today I am happy to announce that I have one on the way! I placed the order this evening and it should arrive later this week. It will show up to the door in a box, all I have to do it cut away the plastic and it will inflate right away. It's not traditional memory foam either, it's Tuft & Needles proprietary open celled foam that has more bounce back than regular memory foam which I found appealing. Anyway I will share more when it arrives if you are interested. I am very ready for a new mattress and can't wait to try it out!

Definitely let us know how you like it. My bed still has a couple years left in it, but when replacement time comes I'm 98% sure the next one will be a Tuft & Needle.

Costco.
We're on week 2 of our $350 (queen) latex foam mattress. Sleep as well as we used to. It was $100 off, so we jumped on it.
Got a $75 frame (Zinus "myeuro smartbase") that works great and gives more underbed storage, as a boxspring is not needed.

For under $450 - we sleep great. The foam isn't hot like memory foam. Feels just right, not too firm or soft or "sinky".
I imagine a decent standard sprung mattress set would have been well over a $1k to replace the one we had.

These new foam mattresses are pretty neat - convenient to order and cheap. We'll see how long they last...

We bought our latest mattress from Ikea. Latex foam (not as hot as memory foam) and wrapped coils. Meets european (low voc) off-gassing standards so not smelly even when new. This particular model was recommended by the Canadian physiotherapy association. Got it with a matching topper to make it a bit softer.

We've had it for a number of years and like it a lot.

One disadvantage - it is remarkably heavy!

Thanks for the info,i have been looking at the Casper,it appears to be $200.00 more than the Tuft&Needle, but is rated much higher by Consume Reports!

be careful about the "research" you do for the wave of online mattress companies.

The so-called experts are often just millenials living in their parent's house or an apartment who are out to make a affliate buck, so set up a website order every mattress write what they think and rinse and repeat.
Then next they set up like 5 more websites that reference their own primary website so they can get google SEO results for being the "top" resource.

I'm sure you may end up happy with what you get, but basically all the reviews in this segment are just a popularity contest on who paid the most money for them.

Don't waste too much time or effort trying to split hairs that a website rated this one a 4.3 versus the other one a 4.7 or trying to optimize. They all are going to be the same roll of the dice whether you like it or not.

Thanks for posting. This good information as my Simmons Beauty Rest has 'sunk'. Quite noticeable as a side-sleeper. I'm considering removing the top, replacing the old worn out foam with new, reinstalling the top, then adding a mattress cover. Can't imagine the individually wrapped springs are worn out. Beats paying $$$$ + sales tax for new.

Down here there's more mattress shops than gas stations...everytime I turn around it seems. Tells me it's a very high-margin business where 'customers' (guppies) are encouraged to regularly 'upgrade'.

And I thought CVS was everywhere....

user Drew99GT has a thread about doing exactly that

Yup, best thing I ever did. 3 inches of latex foam over a good innerspring unit is the best mattress setup you can get, and as long as the innerspring unit is of premium quality, it's essentially a lifetime item as it's not the springs that wear out but the cheap poly foam.

Beware of cheap Costco or other store brand latex or memory foam mattresses - they use very cheap low grade poly foam for the base. That is why they are cheap.

I've done some more homework, and if I ever need a new mattress, this is what I'm getting. It would cost 3 grand in a store and easily last 20+ years without the foam or springs degrading:

Mattress.net also has 7 inch 1.9 lb density high quality base foam blocks with zippered covers of all heights, so you can build a quality mattress of whatever configuration of latex/memory foam on top for cheaper than store or online brands.

You could add a 3 inch topper to that, and with cover, be out roughly 600 bucks for a mattress of greater quality than pretty much all the online companies except maybe Brooklynn Bedding at $750

For $350 we can replace the mattress many times, if needed.
I think the cheap latex will be fine for many years for us.

Read/listen to the podcast above - it is all a marketing gimmick for sure.

meh, you haven't done any real research obviously. If you want to buy a [censored] mattress every 5 years, have at it!

The only marketing gimmick in cheap mattress from Costco on line is they are advertised as latex or memory foam, but use 1.2 or 1.5 lb base foam and cheap synthetic latex. Go read reviews on mattressunderground about how those work out after 5 years. You'll read many reports of people sinking in with no support at all because that cheap foam has compressed and worn out. In fact, I wouldn't even buy a mattress unless they disclose the exact brand and density of foam. It's not worth it and a compete [censored] shoot as to what you're getting.

apples vs bananas

Apparently we're on a poly-foam: "the company’s Serene product is a polyurethane foam designed to relieve pressure while remaining highly durable."

I have no idea how latex vs poly stacks up. Also cannot find specs on the "high density" base layer foam.

Yes, its not a high end mattress (not something we even want), but a 10year warranty and purchase from Costco goes a long way...

Thanks Drew, for the info. I remember your post. Makes sense.

The Simmons BeautyRest is the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on, bar none. Much better than my old Sealy and one of their competitors. It's at least 10yrs old at this point, maybe 15..time flies. Longest time I've ever kept a mattress my entire life.

I am curious what I find when I unstitch the top. HQ foam is always the way to go. Not sure what Simmons is building these days..buy why pay retail + tax??

Ok guys, I am in love with the mattress and possibly even more in love with this company. I will start off by saying that one of the main reasons I purchased the Tuft & Needle over the Ghosted was the overwhelmingly excellent customer service from T&N. After one night of sleep on the T&N I was wanting just a little bit more pressure relief on my shoulder (I am a side sleeper). I got on chat through the T&N website and they are sending me out a T&N mattress topper at no charge. I also noticed maybe a 1/2 inch "divot" spanning about 3 to 4 feet on the right side of the mattress. It's more cosmetic than anything, it didn't affect my sleep or the integrity of the mattress. I mentioned the "divot" to the T&N employee over chat and they requested pictures via email. I did that last night and was informed this morning that they are sending me out a BRAND NEW MATTRESS AT NO CHARGE! They really stand behind their product. They just wanted a picture of the mattress tag so they could identify how the issue originated. I HIGHLY recommend this mattress, it is so very comfortable and supportive and the company has proven themselves to be extremely customer oriented. Bravo Tuft & Needle, I will be recommending your product to all of my friends and family.
