Hi all

New member here , going down the fun rabbit hole of choosing a crankcase oil for small 4-cycle OPE. My john deere x370 with a kawi engine hasn't arrived yet, and im pondering what looks like a great opportunity to run with the factory fill (turf gard 10w30) for the first few hours next season before switching to the 50 plus II 5w-40.

Has anyone analyzed this oil? Appears to be mfg by shell although there is no retail equivalent in the rotella lineup. Im just not seeing a downside to the switch as my summers almost always exceed 102-103 and i do expect light usage when it could dip below zero F. I'll post more detail about my journey resulting in this approach but first wanted comments on the oil itself (yes its approved for this engine).

I'd recommend getting Kawasaki oil, 10W-40 for your machine. Citgo blends for them. Get the Kawasaki oil filters too, the replacement filters from Deere are el cheapo rebranded Stens filters.

Any HDEO flavor in 5W40 would be fine if you plan on using in the winter as well as summer.
Even a 0w40 or 5w40 European passenger car oil that contains higher Phosphorus and Zinc would be more than most people use.

My 1996 JD LX188 with Kawasaki liquid cooled 17HP gets whatever 5w40 I have on the shelf when it comes change time. It mows in the summer and does some light snow plowing in the winter.

Nice tractor, it should last a very long time. Dont bother with the premium Deere oil, it will drain your wallet. Any 5w30-15w40 will perform fine. Good luck.

I was going to use the JD 5w40 as well, but would like to be able to buy in quarts. Since that’s not available, I just use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Euro with deals from NAPA (typically $6.99/qt).

Kawasaki 10W-40 or Mobil 1 15W-50. OE filters.

Most of the Lawncare folks with Kawasaki engines run Mobil 1 15W-50 here in New England.

Thank you all good comments . I was primarily interested in the JD 5w40 because of the high ambient temps im expecting. Supporting 30w for ambient temps into the low 100s, JDs own vis charts reinforce their recommendation of 10w30 turf gard for LTs. However the kawi charts disagree, showing that such temps are clearly in 40w territory!

Appreciate the pointers there aren't many diesel ch-4 5w40 oils that also meet SN which JD requires. Im glad they don't require SP , as i doubt the little kawi suffers from pre ignition.

I wouldn’t run anything less than a 40 weight in an air cooled engine with ambient temperatures above 90F.
This squares with kawi. JD on the other hand would have me run turf gard 10w30 all the way to 104 deg F. No thank you!

I would definately use a 40 grade. My JD 25 hp liquid cooled Kawawsaki motor is specd their Turf Guard 10-30 but Kawasaki the manufacturer specs 40

The Mobil 1 product Looks attractive

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40

Interestingly enough, I find only one 5w40 oil that meets ck-4, SN, and Cummins CES 20081. Valvoline. What am I missing? One oil for both the truck and the mower would be cool.

Looks like I was missing delvac esp! I just might switch my Ram truck over to delvac esp 5w-40 and use it in the 370 as well. Checks all the boxes including the coolaid one! Can't imagine john deere 50 plus II 5W-40 outperforming delvac esp 5w-40

I hate to be a party pooper. Your engine will never know the difference between the two. Both are well formulated oils.

Yea you got that right. My cummins would tho and I like the idea of one oil for both
