Jiffy Lube Synthetic Oil Change - $109.99!

Wow! Prices have gone up everywhere, including ECS Tuning where I get my OEM VW oil / filter. Total cost is around $68 now, was around $50 about a year ago...

Still less expense than Jiffy Lube.

Why would it cost you 80.00?
$10 per quart of oil and $10 for the filter=$80. And that's from Amazon. It's $12 per quart retail at the GM dealer. It's the only oil produced right now for the new and unique "Dexos D" although I have heard Mobil 1 has a Dexos D oil but I've never seen it. It's specific to the new 3.0 diesel.

I still don't understand HOW you can screw up an oil change. IF you can't operate a wrench and successfully not strip the threads on installation you just need to toss your tools in the trash. Same goes for an oil filter....This is a .5 on a scale of 1-10.
The people they hire can manage. More recently one of the tire companies stripped one of the studs/lug nuts on a tire rotation. I found it when I was doing the brake job and took it back and they at least fixed it without a squawk. The minimum wage technicians are the issue and the places where they do oil change/tire rotations are not their moneymakers. They do them to get you in the door so that they can find other problems with your vehicle and they hire kids with no experience to change your oil and swap your tires around.

I went to the dealer to get my alignment done and had them do an oil change while at it too. My car's under warranty until 10y/100k miles and I'd like to have the dealer do the oil changes for warranty purposes. Had to pay $89 for a 7 quart oil change. Businesswise, I know it's a fair deal. As a DIYer, not sure how I feel about an $89 oil change.

Ok, If you must have it
In the fall/winter I run the Dexos D 0W20 in the spring/summer I do it myself using Schaeffer Euro Spec 5w30. The key is using a low sulfated ash formula because of the diesel particulate filter, which both are. Plus, I don't mind getting under it when it's 75deg and sunny, but crawling under a snow or salt covered vehicle on a cold floor isn't in my plans at this stage of life!lol! Add to all of this, in the indiscretion of my youth, I wasted a LOT more money on a LOT dumber things than having my oil changed at a dealership when it's 5deg and snowing!lol!

I ask my shade tree mechanic close by neighbor about his oil change rate at 60-80$,refer my lady friend for her 04 toyota 4 runner charge was 60.Back in 2015 when my 14 camry is on that two year free maintainnace dealer service dept. had all pricing of their oil change ranging from 99.95 to 109.95 plus tax, supplies fee's etc. My Camry was on that 99.95 pricing but after that free oil change they have on that program, done my own oil change around 20$ for oil/filter 0W-20.

I keep hearing about people working for minimum wage-when in realty NO ONE will work for minimum wage. Here in Utah at a 2% unemployment rate try hiring someone to make a burger, change your oil, rotate your tires, or take your money at the super market for minimum wage.

That's something that gets thrown around here on this forum for just plain sloppy workmanship.

Maybe not min wage, little more. People at Jiffy Lube changing your oil are not mechanics, and they hire regular people of street and give them basic training. If I was not changing my oil, I would prefer a mechanic that also works on cars and has some license. Thats why a proper price is $100 and up if you want it done right.

Just to add, when ASE mechanic changes your oil, it usually involves visual inspection from under the car. They have a good eye to spot potential issues and etc. None of that will be done at Jiffy Lube. You will be lucky if they dont forget to add oil or strip drain plug

The local Jiffy Lube and now VIOC(they bought out a small NorCal chain of oil change shops - it’s not Oil Changers that was sold) I see a lot of Uber drivers at. Uber has a 10-20% deal with JL/VIOC for drivers.

Lyft just got into the service business, only if you live near their driver depots in San Francisco/LA/Seattle/Portland. $50 for an “synthetic” oil change which I assume is probably whatever cheap BIB pit-pack oil meeting dexos1 they get and for cars with 5 quarts or less. Lyft drivers have first priority there.

convenience has a cost. 95% of the quick change lube shop customers are not DIY types to begin with so that comparison goes out the window.
This needs repeated over and over and over
