Pretty hard to believe as it hasn't even been that cold here in MN (although I did see -16°F this morning, -35°F with the wind chill). I bet he/she meant +22°F.
It is forecasted to be -2 tonight in OK. So I don't think it was to far off.

Guys, It's COLD uphere too, use the longer OCI capability of the superior oils that we use, because we know what they are from participating in BITOG.
Let it go a week or two, heck SPRING, is only 6 weeks away, according to the Groundhog.
You are doing more harm to your car by taking it to Jiffy etc. than delaying the oil change for a few weeks. Mobil or Castrol and others will introduce a new oil that you will miss out on because you changed your oil now, instead of waiting a few weeks! That's how it always works!
You guys where it is above 50F, disregard the above.

I'm originally from OK and I've been to SD, no offense but I prefer OK. I'm stuck in WI and can't get the wife to leave. No offense to WI, it's a beautiful place with great folks, but the cost of living and the darn taxes are to high for me. Besides, I don't like the Governor. Sorry did not mean to get political.

My local Wal-Mart will change oil, using 'carry in' oil and filter.
However, since you're in Chicago, and your city council hates Wal-Mart (and guns too, while I'm at it), then that isn't an option. Too bad that you live in an area where your elected officials so your thinking for you.

I jusrt used my oil extractor to go down to a 5w-20 for the super-cold. Easy as pie. With 5w-20, you can get the cold cranking benefits of synthetic without the price. Suck out the 5w30 and pour in the 5w-20...done.

I agree with whomever said that JL was FOS. I've taken oil everywhere in my life when I wanted it officially documented that the oil change was done and wanted my own oil put in. I brought my own M1 to the dealer in 1977. All they did was note it on the work order. "Customer provided oil".
The could surely have some issue with the filter. In your case, the only thing that they can warrant is their service. If the filter has issues, you may have a claim against their installation of it. If they install their filter ..then their liability is clearly defined and it's between them and the filter manufacturer.

I'm not old or fat but I still won't change my oil in extreme cold weather. That's why I always time my oil changes so that they end up in warmer weather.
I don't know how you guys can handle the extreme cold, it's 3F here now and that feels bloody cold enough. I'd hate to see what -22F feels like!
Ugly3, do you absolutely need your oil changed right now? What oil and how many miles are on it? Are you sure you couldn't wait another 1000 miles? By then it could be a lot warmer out.

The only time I wont change my oil is when it's wet out, covered in snow, or cloudy (don't want to get rained on halfway into a change).
Otherwise I warm the car, open the hood, go inside to get the supplies, unscrew the drainplug, go inside to warm up, unscrew the filter, go back inside to warm up, screw the plug back on, go inside to warm up, put the filter on, go inside to warm up, put in the oil, go inside to warm up, then tighten the filler cap, close the hood, start the car, go inside to warm up, put the supplies away, then take the car out for a drive.
Actually wait it is a PITA, I shouldn't have started the autorx treatment in december, I have 2 more OCIs before it gets warm

I own a shop and gladly change the oil for my customers that supply their own oil and I also don't mind if they hang out and chew the fat with me while I do it for them. I really only have a few new customers that actually do that becouse after a while they realize that I don't charge any more than most retailers for the oil. I took my truck to JL once to have them do a "customer supplied" oil change. They'd never had anyone ask that. When I asked what they'd charge, the manager said, "buy us lunch!" I gave each guy $5.00 for lunch at the Chinese place across the street, so it cost me $15.00 plus my oil and filter.
The real funny thing was hearing the tech say he'd never seen a "0W" oil before!! I was using GC at the time. He looked at the bottle like it came from outer space.

Probably got the best oil change that way too since the guys actually got something tangible for their oil change instead of the minimum wage pay for the job.
I take my Amsoil oil and filter to Walmart and pay only $8 and some odd cents........
My local independent ASE technician has no problem allowing me to bring in my own oil and filter and changing it for me.
$15 for labor and disposal of the old oil and filter.

Me either....now is a good time to go shopping for an independent mechanic who won't screw you over and you can get to know. I found one and it's really great because all of his guys are dealer trained wrenches who do excellent work and know what they are doing and don't rape you for fake work like JL will do.
Big ol Carhart coveralls are your friend! As long as sloppy wet snow isn't dripping from the vehicle, I'll change oil when it's -15F! However, first, I'll run my garage space heater for about an hour to warm it up.
