Hello and how many of you folks here remember the Jamesway, Hills and other long gone stores that were in my area? Our small town had a AMES also. Even had a BILO groceries store that recently shut down. Let me hear stories about stores that arent around anymore and the deals you got at them.

Man, thats a list of stores. I remember our Jamesway was real small and didnt have much other than clothing, that mom bought my brother and I. Now its a plumbing supply store.

It is "Bradlees" BTW.

edit:apparently there is a Bradley's AND a Bradlees.

I remember back when CT still had "blue laws" my father would bring us down to the Two Guys parking lot and watch people race their sports cars around the cones set up in the parking lot.

I believe the purchase of Zayre did in Ames.

GEMs was also in our area.

Anyone here ever score any great oil deals at these stores? I dont recall AMES, JAMESWAY or HILLS having oil deals, but then again I was a early teen while these stores were around.

Remember the first oil change that I ever did when I started driving in 1978 on my '68 Mercury. Bought the oil at Jamesway. It was Gulf Oil (Gulfpride, I believe)10W30. Bought it at regular price (.59 qt.) Ended up working there my Jr. and Sr. years in High School running Sporting Goods on nights and weekends and picked up a few other bargains as well

Yeah, the Jamesway in our town was TINY, not much to look at in it. I contemplated working there, but worked at the WENDYS in town as it had salad bar and was good sized place.

thanks for the reply Tdbo

Ben Franklin's always had some interesting doodads in it when I was a kid. More recently, I miss K's merchandise mart. TV's, furniture, handguns, and auto supplies all under one roof. It was like a smaller, classier wally world with old style customer service and a small-town feel. I don't know if it was a local to me only chain.

They've been gone for a LONG time. You wouldn't remember 'em if you're less than 35. Part dime store, part hardware store, part ladies arts and crafts-it was a unique place. I think the last standing one or two operate independently in your neck of the woods.

Zayre, Venture, Robert Hall (Clothing), Builders Square, Handy Andy, Service Merchandise.

I'm getting depressed...

Woolworth's, Lechmere, Highland (appliances) then they went TU and a (drumroll) Circuit city took over the store. We know how that worked out.

Highland, in the very early 1990s, were among the first to advertise price matching, even price matching themselves, 110%.

Tweeter.

Ames had 69 cent oil AR pretty much every week in the very late 1990s, when I started DIYing oil. I felt good about getting "name brand" instead of walmart's Tech2000 for $.74. The store was pretty dead in there, probably in bankruptcy already. They always had 70% off fine jewelry.

There are still BI-LO stores around here, but they are usually relegated to low income areas. I think a lot of smaller grocery store chains are going out of business due to super centers and larger grocery store chains.

There was a general merchandise chain called Roses that I went to a lot with my parents when I was a kid. It was somewhere between a Wal-Mart and a drug store. Their prices were pretty low, and it was in a convenient location. It started struggling in the early 2000s though and held on until maybe 2007.

I also remember a chain called Home Quarters that was similar to Home Depot and Lowe's. It closed in the mid 1990s when Home Depot and Lowe's built stores nearby. I'm sure my parents still have some things with Home Quarters price tags on them in their garage. Right next to the Home Quarters was an Eckerd drug store, also now gone. Come to think of it, that shopping center had a Circuit City too.

OMG, I remember all of those and forgot about venture, and I worked there in my high school years! We even got a laugh from an old lady who got ticked because we wouldn't honor a zayre coupon, they were long defunct by then. I really miss service merchandise-they had a weird pickup procedure, but talk about variety. Am I the only one who remembers Mcdade's?

Anyone remember Otasco? They were a hardware/general store. I don't know how wide spread they were but I know they closed their Oklahoma City stores somewhere around 1985.
