There used to be Roses,Big-K,TG&Y,Hecks and Maloneys. At one time,we had a Maloneys,Hecks and a TG&Y in my town, not at the same time but they were here.

We also had a Ben Franklins but they followed you around in the store.Maloneys moved into the old store when Franklins closed.

There also used to be Furrow, they were similar to Lowes.

Must be an upstate NY guy, still have a calculator bought at the last. Remember them all.

Remember EJ Korvettes/Korvettes, Zayre and Lechmere in New England. Also Revco DS, which was sold to CVS which isn't near as good.

Yep, there was one in Marion, Ohio in Southland Mall.

Two others that I just thought of: Wells and Kings

Also, another home improvement chain: Busy Beaver.

I remember Jamesway, Carl's Drugs, and TG&Y. We had a 5 and 10 that we called "the dime store," but I'm not sure whether that was a chain. There was also a dime-store type Ben Franklin back then--I wonder if that's the same company as the current Ben Franklin Crafts that's common in Virginia.

Roses are still around. Two just opened in Columbus, Ohio. They seem to be a lot like a five and dime and the company that owns them ran a lot of five and dimes.

I remember Otasco's Springfield, MO store at Campbell and Sunshine. Also remember a smaller Otasco store in Lawrence, KS. Both closed in the mid-1980's. I still have a stainless steel thermos that I bought at the Lawrence Otasco.

Lawrence also had a TG&Y Family Center and Gibson's for discount stores when I lived there 1969-1973. The TG&Y store is now an Ace hardware. We spent a pretty good amount of money at the TG&Y since we lived only two blocks away. I remember getting oil, a TG&Y "little red wagon" and our daughter's first shoes (little brown chukka boots) there. My wife was (is) dead set against standard white baby shoes. Gibson's store sent through several business changes and I am not sure who is even in that store today.

This thread really brings back some memories...

Ames - Where we used to go for gardening supplies as a kid.

Hills - Where the toys are (or were)

Service Merchandise - Always fun filling out the cards and seeing the purchase come down the conveyor belt.

Woolworths - Downtown department store

Montgomery Ward - Another downtown, non-mall department store.

Grants had a dining area along with a counter to eat / drink at . Was a nice store . A larger Woolworths .

Had a JJ Newberry as well . The sites for some these stores are still empty and decaying in our city and so many others . Sad to see . You would have a major food / discount store for your part of town and could walk or have a short drive to . Shame . Would help with your resale value of your home as well . So much for progress . Makes for more use of fuel too , due to longer drives and slow moving traffic .

Not all of them. There's still some scattered in smaller towns.

For home improvement I remeber Furrow's, Mr Howe, Central Hardware. Discount we had Meyer('s?), not to be confused with Meijer. Also in Cincinnati area we had Van Luenen's. Clothing we had Shilito's and McAlpin's.

I remember Jamesway, Bradlees, Caldor, Steinbach, Sterns(which is part of Federated which is Macy's), Rickel, Clothing Town, Borders is gone now, RagShop(sewing stuff), Channel(like Rickel).

Now Kmart will probably join the list amongst other stores.

I just found out that the store re-emerged as an on-line retailer.

But back in the day, the brick-stores went under due to big-box competition. I used to love "Silent Sam" and as already mentioned, watching your purchase come down the conveyor belt.
