I've Just Cheated On Mobil 1 and Puralator

I have to confess, I just picked up 2 of the 5 quart jugs of the QS Ultimate Durability, and a Fram Tough Guard.

The Fram filter & 1 of the QS is going in my 2005 Town and Country, I change oil every 6 months, mileage during the period is approximately 2k, it's my wife's car.

The other QS is going into my sons 2011 Chevy Cruze.

I've been using M1 & Puralator for years, but my infidelity today saved me about $11.

I still have the receipt for Walmart, I could take it back but....

The TG is the better choice for the short interval. 2k is painfully underutilized for both lubricant and filter but at least you choose good products. That combo should easily be good for over 5k on the oil and double that on the filter.

The cruze may benefit from shorter runs depending on engine.

I also have a 2011 Cruze with the 1.4T. They are hard on their oil.
The OLM on our cars is also very optimistic....so I change before it hits 30%.
UOA's on this site show that Mobil 1 can go a bit further than QSUD but if you are doing 7.5K or less the QSUD is fine.

My son's Cruze is the non-turbo and I have in the past changed oil at the 25 reading, have used M1, mileage at 25% is around 4k.

Is Fram still hated by folks?

I considered the Ultra but will never reach the mileage in a year.

My son's Cruze is the 1.8 non turbo. Mileage when the OLM is at 25% is about 4k, so I am thinking the QS will work, it's Dexos1 approved.

Are Frams still hated on this board?

You made good choices IMO.

Yes there are a few irrational haters here or anywhere else you want to go, but most here will tell you are fine. Most of the hate is directed at the orange can. The Tough Guard you bought has a good following here and the Fram Ultra is the bomb! But a waste at your intervals.

It seems like the fiber end caps turn some folks off, but I'm beginning to think that gluing like materials together, such as fiber to fiber, would produce an excellent bond.

Actually, the way the "Tear-A-Lator" Puro Classics have been tearing media lately, any Fram would be a better choice!

It does, Fram says so as well, part of why they originally patented the idea (since expired). Been a number of metal endcaps that have popped off posted due to the difficulty bonding them, Puro's and Motorcrafts mostly IIRC. And as mentioned it's the Puro Classics that have been keeping the board hopping with tearing issues, not Frams. But haters will still hate.

Not by most, but some. There are still some that love to hate the orange can.

Sounds like you made a good choice. While I also am a M1 fan, considering the low mileage that your wife puts on her van, it makes sense to go with a lower cost option. If you are looking for further savings, check with your local NAPA and ask when they run their semi-annual NAPA Gold filter sale. If you get them on sale, you should be able to save another couple bucks over the Fram, and have a filter that is at least equivelant, if not superior to the Fram Tough Guard.

That's my only gripe against Fram filters. I think they are a little pricey. They do have rebates from time to time, but those are a hit or miss deal. With NAPA, the sales are so regular I can put it on my calendar when to buy filters next.

Would it be incorrect to think that the end caps would also be an additional source of filtering media?

I just bought a Fram OCOD yesterday for my old Jeep. It has had them many times in the past and did not die yet. She is only 20 years old and hopefully I will get 20 more from her. Go Fram Go

As much as i really like the TG and Ultra i can't ever see myself buying the orange can.

It seems to me that the marginal difference in price between the Orange Can and the TG makes the TG a good value.

I am feeling somewhat liberated from my M1 and Puralator only philosophy I've held to for 10+ years.

The Tough Guard is a great filter. At 99% efficiency and a 10k miles rating I will never need a fancier filter than that.

I was a Mobil 1/Purolator on my last Accord, but I'm going with Mobil 1 EP and the Ultraguard for Toyota and experimenting with my DD. It's been awhile since I found the Purolator PureOne on sale or Bosch Plus Mileage, which I would normally use.

for the price i think a wix made microgard or napa proselect would be a better deal.

or a motorcraft if they are available for what you need.
