This is not rocket science or "new research" in my book, it's only common sense. Our bodies are like a good car. If you take care of it, it'll take care of you. When/if you give up on it, you risk your longevity.

Eat Healthy After 70 & You'll Boost Chances of Reaching 80 by 24%

Say you've made it to the ripe old age of 70 after a lifetime of not-so-great eating habits -- why change now?

Because you may live longer, new research suggests.

While the link between diet and longevity is well studied, many seniors think that after a certain age, what they eat doesn't really matter. Not true, according to a study just published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Scientists from the University of Maryland looked at the diets of 2,582 seniors (ages 70 to 79), categorizing them as mostly healthy foods (fruit, veggies, fish, poultry, whole grains, etc.), high-fat dairy (ice cream, cheese, less produce), sweets/desserts (doughnuts, cakes, cookies, etc.) and other dietary patterns. During the 10-year study, 739 people died.

Compared to the healthy foods group, the high-fat dairy eaters were 40% more likely to die, while the sweets group was 37% more likely to die during that decade. The healthy foods group also enjoyed significantly higher intakes of folate (+17%), vitamin B12 (+22%), and beta-carotene (vitamin A, +36%).

Such findings have important implications for our aging population, as the worldwide number of people over age 65 is expected to more than double to nearly 1 billion by 2030.

The effects of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are cumulative -- yet also highly responsive to change. Previous research suggests that 75% of your longevity potential comes from choices which affect not just the length of life, but its quality as well. For example, one study found that seniors who ate over 2 cups of veggies daily enjoyed a 38% decrease in the rate of cognitive decline.

Exercise plays a key role too: Dr. David Nieman found that active older women had immune cells that functioned 67% higher than those of less active women.

From the second article (the Daily mail one):

[...] The fact is, we can’t digest fibre. How can something we can’t even digest be so important to us, nutritionally? [...]

Boy, you sure refuted the OP!

From the 1st article: "His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food."

That article has NOTHING to do with the benefits of eating healthy.

The fiber quote in the 2nd article is priceless - the fact that fiber is not digestible is exactly why it's good for you.

With almost everything i enjoy being regulated, villainized, banned or talked about being banned i wonder if i really want to live to be 80.
Personally i hate living in a society run by Dr. Cocteau and his cronies(Demolition Man character).

Be Well Citizen.

Are you willing to put it to a test?

I don't know your age, but I'm willing to put it to the test.

I'll follow a diet that's rich in vegetables and considered "healthy".

You follow the twinkie diet you so brilliantly quoted.

In 10 years (I'll be 76) we'll see who has the overall better health.

Are you willing to back up the articles you posted?

To the unthinking masses, any type of weight loss = better health... That's what they advertise on T.V. so it must be true!

I find it funny that at some point all these health nuts are going to be lying in a hospital bed dying of nothing.

A good share of the worlds problems are caused by people that don't get another fiber. Constipation makes you cranky.

Not trying to "refute" the OP, just pointing out that there are all kinds of ideas and how these things constantly change.

Eggs are bad then good. Margarine is good then bad. Saccharin causes cancer then it doesn't. Inoculations are good, then bad, then good again....

Even Jack Lalanne died!

Can you imagine the gastrointestinal reality of the guy who ate twinkees, potato chips and cookies for 10 weeks!

The movie Supersize Me pretty much sums up what unhealthy eating will do to you on a regular basis; it's almost as bad as alcoholism to your body.

While it is true that eating a healthy diet and exercise are keys to living a long life, its also many other factors. Enviromental, and genetics.

To also mention to eat healthy foods is also VERY exspensive. To buy as much fruit and veggies that you "should" eat on a daily basis would cost a family of four hundreds per week. Unless you grow the food yourself.

Then you have the pesticides and the growth hormones in the "healthy" food these days, so you may want to buy organic, which is even MORE exspensive.

to some, its not a matter of wanting to eat healthy, most of us just can't afford to. It sounds like a cop out, but where I live so called "healthy foods" are very exspensive and feeding four mouths?? I just can't afford it.

As for exersise, I agree. Very important here. Problem is too is climate. Where I live its 120F in the summer. I like many folks can't afford to buy my own equip, so in the summer time you go to work, get home and the heat just drains you.

Healthy living is a "lifestyle" and for some, its an easier way to live. While for others its just plain not affordable. You cant put a price on your own health, but in today's tough economic times, I am worried about where money is coming from to pay the mortgage, not to buy an organic carrot.

Its an ironic story to say the least. Eat Healthy and live longer. In the end, I think it really boils down to good ol' genetics and living in a good clean evniroment. Eating healthy is very important, but not economically feasable to some. So diet choices need to be done in moderation to some how get the best of both worlds.

Jeff

As I recall (never watched the whole thing), the Supersize me guy intentionally over ate and would always "supersize" to the largest portions when asked.

That's not smart eating and it's hardly surprising that his health deteriorated eating nothing but too much fast food.

You may be able to find an article that says drinking sewer water is good for you, but IMHO, fruit and vegetables are THE two most important foods for humans. I couldn't imagine life without them.

If you don't like fruit & vegetables, learn to like them. In return they'll give you back better health than any other food.

You find it funny that innocent people are going to die? Do you hate people that care about their health?

Everyone dies. It's a fact.

I think you have 2 choices here:
You can run from the train bearing down on you or you can prop up a lawn chair, lean back, crack a cold beverage of your choosing, and watch it happen.
