It's impossible to enjoy driving these days.

Those are the ones that the eye doctor gives you after you've had eye dilation drops put in your eyes for examination before your mandatory cataract surgery. I feel that their popularity is due to the frugality of those of a certain vintage.

Getting mad at someone who flashed their highbeams at you because you were blocking the passing lane, is like cutting in line at the store and then being told you're rude, and you getting mad at them. In other words, if you did the right thing in the first place, no one would need to remind you of your inconsiderate actions. +1 for the highbeam flasher, -1 for the lane blocker.

I as well have tried the slower, smoother approach to driving. I usually set the cruise at 65 or 70 (depending on the speed limit), keep a good distance back from cars ahead of me, gradually slow down (to an almost complete stop if necessary) for the hemorrhoids, and try and not "fight back" anymore with the total road ragers. Makes for a much better experience overall. It's actually quite laughable. When you sit back, slow down, and just experience the mayhem on the roads instead of engaging, it's staggering how disrespectful people are. Vehicles become a suit of armor for the deeply angry and disturbed among us. Someone will literally try and run you off the road, but that same person will smile at you and say hi in the grocery store. Cars are kind of like the internet in that way! I think it's a symptom of our society, our culture, and our economy going down the toilet. Most people (the ones who pay attention) deep down know we're headed for a bad place. Ahhh Orwell...

YOU EXACTLY READ MY MIND.

Yes, but there's two sides to this. If I'm in the left lane and doing at least the speed limit and I'm passing slower moving traffic, I don't take too kindly to some clown coming up behind me and flashing me his lights just because he/she wants to do 20 MPH over the speed limit. When I'm done passing I'll move right, but I'm not going to go out of my way to facilitate someone else's desire to mega-speed.

That's exaclty what I'm talking about. If a semi truck is slower than me.. I want to pass him ..but I still want to drive around the speed limit.. these jerks who going way past the speed limit are making me mad. Why can't they just calm down and wait until I'm done passing!!!!! I hope Karma will K!ll them.

It's a war zone out there. Safe drivers that want to go the speed limit and drive smoothly versus people who hate the speed limit and don't care about human life. I guess my biggest beef is speeders who disrespect the speed limit drivers who want to pass a slower vehicle like a semi.

My Motto is: Technology goes faster, the human mind and reaction time stays the same. Drive safely, folks.

Oh I see. So, because I speed I can't drive smoothly, I don't care about human life. If your going to make blanket statements like that, and especially ones that are insulting, when you really do NOT know me, or anyone else, then you can shut it.

For your information, I DO care about human life very much. Mine, and others too. Do I speed if I have family in the car? Yes. Does that mean I don't give 2 **** about them and hope they die? Of course not. To insinuate that I, and all other speeders don't, is extremely insulting. Be careful how you word things.

Not getting personal, but I'm sure the stats show that you have a higher risk of serious injury or death the faster you go. The laws of physics always apply to everyone in your car.
Would you rather have a tire blow out at 80 mph or 65? Hit a tire off a truck? Have deer run out infront of you?
The increase in risk is not that big but its always there if you think about it.
65mph is always safer unless someone else on the road makes it unsafe for you, but IME doing the speed limit in the far right lane annoys no one...

Well, yes and no. It is almost beyond dispute (see below, however) that as far as "absolute speed" is concerned, the slower the better. Less energy normally means less damage to both the vehicles and their occupants.

On the other hand, "relative speed" is a critical factor in safety too. If the flow of traffic on a stretch of Interstate is averaging about 80 mph (I know, in some places, THAT is slow...), and one isolated driver is doing 55 mph, while he may be "legal", he is probably the greatest danger on the road. That driver's "deviant" speed will cause multiple other drivers to have to move about to avoid, thereby increasing the chance of collisions, a danger that would be hugely reduced if everyone were at about the same speed.

One more thing, which is definitely ironic. Today's cars are designed to be very rigid and resistant to collapse. At work, in both civil and criminal cases, I've seen instances in which relatively low speed impacts caused relatively greater injury than might be expected, because the impact was not sufficient to start the crumple zones crumpling. As a result, more of the energy of the impact gets transmitted through the structure, right to the occupants. Still, I'd rather have a car that can effectively dissipate energy in a very high speed impact, but in exchange, we occasionally see this anomaly. So, lower speed impacts don't always result in less damage and injury. Food for thought.

I fully agree that going 55mph when everyone going 80+ isn't really a good idea. What would be the speed limit on an interstate with traffic speeds like that? 70mph? Atleast 65 I guess. Going 65 shouldn't inconvience anyone much at all.

Here transport trucks are now limited to 105km/h and the limit is 100 so going 100-105 in the right lane is hassle free. Usually the enforced limit is 120kmh so not many folks go faster than that, some do but they stick out.

Your point about some cars being so rigid that they injure people in small accidents is interesting, I guess my Neon in more common low speed crashes might be safer afterall

Cops driving is another issue altogether... They set a poor example in general in my area...

It's common sense. The faster you go, the higher percentage that you will make a mistake, lower reaction. etc etc.

Defending speeding in a debate is like defending cigarette smoking and obesity.. you just can't win unless you like dying and don't care about human life.

Nick_R: Go the speed limit, take it easy, unwind yourself. Be less stressful when driving. Try listening to classical music or something while driving. Stay safe, Brother.

Smoking and obesity can kill you by themselves. Speeding cannot.

I mean, if we're going to talk common sense... Just saying.

I was about to offer similar advice to you with respect to reading other people's posts.

If I had my way, all municipal vehicles would have a 24-hour risk management number on the back with "How's my driving?" written on top. Public works trucks, city busses, it doesn't matter, I've seen poor driving in all of them.

That's true, but it also reflects turning a blind eye to the other critical variables that are virtually always in play when considering "total net safety" out on the road. As I stated above, relative speed is a critical consideration. Sure, drivers should account for the speed limit (and actually obey it in many situations), but if you are stubbornly insisting on "doing the limit" when the major flow of traffic is doing 15 over the limit, then YOU are indeed a great danger to yourself and everyone else out there.

Very poor comparison. Smoking and obesity are two problems that are indeed virtually impossible to justify as providing any positive benefit. Staying consistent with the flow of traffic, however, even if it is moving at 15+ over the limit, has the huge benefit of preventing you from becoming an obstacle that everyone else has to maneuver to avoid. This reflects a wish to live, not die, and it reflects respect for those around you, though they too may be imperfect sinners and speeders...

First, it's up to Nick to decide whether he observes the speed limit or not. He's a big boy, and he doesn't need big brother (or, ahem, you) commanding him to obey. If he elects not to, well, that's up to him, and I'm sure that he is prepared to deal with consequences, if any (tickets, etc.). Second, sure, we should all take it easy, and I do. I'm very relaxed doing 80-ish on our typically uncrowded I-10 with my trusted Valentine-One supplementing my vigilance and judgment. And finally, please don't tell him (or by implication, me) to listen to classic music, or I'll have to tell you to listen to old Dire Straights CDs from the 80s...

Safety is not a one-dimensional thing.

Recently made ~4.5 hour trip to Atlanta, and back . Biggest gripe is folks hanging in the left lane, what I consider the passing lane, and holding up the flow of traffic and faster moving vehicles. That would include holding up drivers that choose to go faster than the posted limit, that's up to them if they choose to go faster. Not my job to hold them up, and I expect and appreciate the same courtesy.

I agree with not liking folks hanging in the left lane. But claiming speeding is OK, or safe is just a case that it hasent caught up with you -----Yet!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets hope it never does but then it still doesn't mean its safe, to believe so is just foolish.

Like talking or texting while driving, just because one has gotten away with it so far doesn't mean its safe, just means nothing has happened yet.

I'll continue to drive at the speed I enjoy at the curent time I'm behind the wheel, and stay in the right hand lane except when passing, if others do not like it, they have two choices. 1. Get over it and go on with their life. 2. Stay upset and be miserable. Their choice, makes me no difference. If they try to attack me, I carry a cell phone to contact 911, I'm armed, and lastely I have a good lawyer, they will have a problem of greater magnitudes than they wish.

Studies have shown that speed does not kill, and I am a firm believer of that. Poor driving decisions and stupidity on the other hand does. The problem is that anyone can basically get a drivers license today. Driver training is a joke. So in that case speeding and basically every other driving manoeuvre is dangerous in N/A. I was unfortunate to see the aftermath of a serious crash involving a young woman who was texting while speeding and lost control of her focus, hopped the median and was hit head on by truck. The car was unrecognizable. She survived but her passenger did not. Why can't people realize that you cannot text and talk on your phone safetly while driving.
