Stay right except to pass. There were a few stretches of road in western NY where everybody stayed in the smoother left lane as the right was moonscape from over-weight 18-wheelers. Everybody camped in the left and went right when a faster car came up behind. All the locals knew this, and it worked great. Even the state and county boys/girls did this!
The "stay right except to pass" signs are common sights on the interstates around here. I do my best to follow, except when circumstances dictate otherwise.

I drive 5 hours every weekend (both ways) because my work takes me away from home, so I see a lot of things on the roadways. I have to say semis drive me absolutely nuts! As if it's not bad enough there are so many of them on the roads these days, the way their drivers drive makes things even worse.
Most of my travels are on multi-lane highways (4 or more lanes). I understand semis are a necessary part of our economy (though I think we could get many of the long haulers off the roads if we better utilized our railways), and I respect the job these drivers have to do, the majority of them are very annoying at the least, and dangerous at the most.
On 4 lane highways I constantly have to deal with truckers passing each other, and they clearly don't give a turd how many people they hold up doing it. Truck #1 decides to overtake truck #2. Truck #1 is doing 60.5 MPH, while truck #2 is doing 60 MPH, so it takes truck #1 several minutes to pass truck #2. Meanwhile, while all this is taking place in a 70 MPH speed zone, passenger cars are backed up for 1/2 mile behind these two trucks. I understand truckers being on a tight schedule and all, but come on, how many seconds does the driver actually shave off of his total travel time by making this pass and holding up traffic as opposed to waiting until no one's coming up from behind the pass him before he makes his pass? You wouldn't believe how many times I get stuck behind these truckers doing this during just one 5 hour trip. It's very frustrating!

That's because there are way too many drivers on the roads today who live in a "me first" world, or they're completely oblivious to what's going on around them. I don't know how many times a day I see the soccer mom blasting down the road in a 6000 lb SUV, speeding, tailgating, not using turn signals, etc, and then I see she's yacking on a cell phone. You have to understand that most large company trucks these days are governed under 65 mph; some at 61 mph, to save fuel. That's why a truck governed at say, 64 mph, will pass another truck at 62 mph and it takes forever.
This is another thing that used to drive me up the wall; I though these guys were doing this stuff on purpose as a game or something until I realized how slow these trucks are governed. If a guy has 11 hours to drive his 64 mph truck, you better believe he's going to pass another truck governed at 62 mph regardless of how long it takes or how much it [censored] off us mere "4 wheelers" as the truckers say.
I just hang back until the left lane is clear and proceed on my marry way.

Driving through the retirement communities on rte 70 through the center of the state does draw out the "45 in a 55 zone" old folks...

The worst is when ungoverned trucks fly up your rear, expect you to faster when conditions are bad/unsuited for a passenger car to go faster. I've had some truckers try running me off the road on very twisty two-lane roads where my land yacht just won't go faster without being a danger to myself or others on or living alongside that road. I've called 911 or the truck's dispatcher a few times on truckers who have put my life in danger to meet their schedule. It's great to see how their behavior goes from rude to passive when they see you on the cell phone. The seconds they saved by being a bully just got sacked by the minutes wasted talking with their irate dispatcher or Officer/Trooper Friendly.

See, this is what I mean. Getting angry about it isn't going to stop it from happening. They're going to continue doing it - you darn well bet a trucker is going to pass a slower truck to get as many miles in his 11 hour shift as possible. Yes, some of them are jerks about it and will hold up an entire stretch of highway for minutes on end, but at the same time, I've seen a few trucks try and pass, realize they're holding up a huge line of traffic, and slow back down behind the truck they're trying to pass and let everyone by until traffic clears.
Remember, every single consumer item you used today was brought to you on a truck. Give the guys a little slack; they have one of the hardest jobs.

The other day we were waiting to turn left from a parking lot, and the idiot behind us drove (flew) around us on the left just to cut off the cars I was waiting for. Their vehicle was filthy and such and that reminded me what I read once: "...be careful of people whose vehicles are very dirty/ dinged up because since they don't care about their own vehicle, they sure as [censored] won't/don't care about yours(!)."

The a.hole truckers caused a 12 mile backup because no less than five of them decided to "police" the left lane, which caused the backup to stretch further and further back. There was something like 4 exits blocked by this backup. How many people stuck in this would not have been, if everyone just drove normally and they were able to exit when they wanted to?
It is a lane until it isn't any more. Use it.
