There are surely exceptions. While you may feel, as I do, that most of them are pretty much generic in style, I can't say that they are boring to drive. Sure the econo boxes ..but there are plenty of my friends that admitted that they would have paid more for something like a Nissan Maxima (80's boxier style) and a few other offerings. The Miada ..surely the ZX cars ..Mitsubishi 3000 GT .. Japan clearly produced more screaming deals on wheels than anyone else in bang for the buck. They lost their monetary edge during the shop to you drop financial scam ..and even domestic production ended up being a cost saving measure.

Depends on your goals.

Best "bang for buck" car if you want something that will go stupidly fast for the least monetary investment would probably be the Fox Body Mustang.

2nd would probably be a 4th gen F-body due to the LSx.

If you want something that handles, and will make stupid power, can't go wrong with an '03/'04 Cobra. 1,000HP capable stock internals. Absolutely ridiculous.

Not everybody's cup of tea I'm sure, and they definitely aren't Japanese, but I would definitely classify the above as "deals on wheels" if they meet the intended purpose.

All those are fine ..if nothing exists outside of a Ford dealership

I'd say the SRT Neon was a great deal. The Chevrolet Corvette is a great deal ..at any offered level. Shame that Detroit has such numerical disadvantage compared to the Asians. I'm sure that there's a market for many of the offerings from the domestics ..but not in sufficient numbers to justify the assembly line that needs to be running 24/7 for most of the year.

I was one of those people, though I didn't pay "more". I had an eighties model Maxima and Sentra, the main reason being that they were the cheapest cars in their class at the time. My Granada at the time was a great car, so was my Cavalier. But I could get the Maxima for around the same price as the Granada, yet the Maxima came with A/C, Fuel Injection, more HP, a Bose sound system, etc. I thought that the Maxima was a huge bargain, and though it was billed as a "luxury" car it wasn't much more than an Econobox with nice features.

It was the same thing with the Sentra, at the time it was the only way to get exceptional gas mileage and still get a four door sedan that five people could sit in. I had good luck with my Maxima so I figured I'd give the Sentra a shot, once again at the time it was the cheapest car in the country. I could get it for a couple of thousand less than a comparably equipped Cavalier. The only exception was that it was still carbeurated at a time when everyone else had pretty much gone to fuel injection. Anyway, it ended up serving me well before it unexpectedly threw a rod going down the highway one day.

It wasn't much longer after that the Asian makes ended up closing the price barrier, and all of the sudden the "great" deals that could be found in purchasing an import had disappeared. To me, it seems that the Big Three still offer the most "bang for the buck" in terms of price.

Hey now, I did mention the F-body

The SRT-4 was also a great bang-for-buck, forgot about that car!

I do abhor FWD though.

The 'vette is normally outside most people's price range. You can build a VERY fast Termi for the price of a 'vette.

Though a used C5 isn't too bad price-wise.....

Is it Ford's fault they build cars with such great performance value?

Ford has done a few things right. Make that many. The products of distinction in my mind are the Mustang and the Crown Vic. Both are still around after GM folded on like offerings (Camaro, TransAm, FS Caprice). The Ranger, in its original form ..and I guess if you have to compare it to what the rest of the small domestic pickup market morphed to ..in its current form too. I do know that the parts counter man loves you when you stop by to visit.

I know I sound like a broken record but don't forget the GN.

I cracked the 12s with about $200 into the engine. Went many 12.2s@ 112mph on the stock turbo, IC, just ~$600 in mods, fuel pump, regulator, chip, lots of boost, and free stuff like open exhaust. Went deep into the 11s with $1,500. 10.60s were accomplished with home ported stock heads and intake, small flat tappet cam, and running out of turbo. All in all I have only $3,500 in the engine. Stock rear end, $1,500 in the trans and convertor, $600 in suspension.

I laugh when I see guys on the TL forum blowing $4,500 on a supercharger that nets 13.5 to 14.0 1/4 times and talking about how moddable they are.

Oh yes! The GN and the Regal T-Type! Add those to the list too!

I love seeing Civic's with massive turbo kits barely breaking into the 13's....

Saw this one guy with the valve cover off and a huge breaker bar tightening his head down after his run.... Yeah, that's a reliable setup.....

Good build quality but with a cheap looking plastic interior, a low torque high RPM engine coupled to a poorly managed automatic transmission, and a driving position only a woman or short legged man could endure for any length of time. Other than more interior room and slightly better mileage thanks to the 4 cyl engine, it's not a better car in any way I can find than the 2000 Taurus she had previously.

That's my most current datapoint...

I chuckled when I read your post. My daughter had a Taurus also. Constant problems with the power windows. Couldn't keep a non-pulsating rotor on the front end. Tractor-like engine sounds.

She's had two Camry's since...

I travel for a living and the Camry has replaced the Taurus as the darling of the rental car fleets. Just like the Taurus, the Camry is a zzzzzzz of a car, which makes it a great rental. The only glaring fault that I can find with the Camry is that has incredible dash reflection on the windshield.

My daughter's Taurus had the overhead cam V6, not the pushrod model. Maybe that's why I didn't find it to be a problem. She did have one window switch replaced on warranty. No other problems.

The Camry hasn't any problems either. But listening to the engine scream after the auto trans pauses, then eventually finds the right gear is really annoying. Worse is its need to downshift, sometimes 2 gears just to maintain 70 MPH on central Illinois hills on the Interstate. It's not like we have any tough grades around here.

The Camry 4cyl would be a great engine in a light manual transmission sports car. It's completely wrong for an automatic transmission sedan.

By the way, the front brakes on my 2000 4Runner started pulsating about 60K miles. I ignored it since turning the rotors or changing them only fixes the problem temporarily.

I'm not sure the rotors are the problem anyway. I think it might be material transfer onto the rotors from the pads. I put new pads on about 5K miles back without doing any work to the rotors and the problem is almost gone.

That silver dash trim has all the class of a $29 Chinese DVD player. Toyota isn't the only one who's done that though. The silver trim on the current Mustang dash is also hideous.

We can hope that's a trend that goes away soon.

The dash and stereo lighting itself is reminiscent of a $29 Chinese boombox. I'm only surprised that it doesn't flash in time with the beat from the stereo. Maybe next model year.

My neighbors dash in his Camry is pretty tacky. It's read "DISC READ ERROR" on the display since it left the factory. Since it's not covered under warranty, I guess he's stuck with a non-functioning Apex Boombox display until he upgrades to aftermarket.

I blame the cheapo dash styling on the latest children fresh out of design school. I believe they're the people bringing us the current auto styling fads such as the "Tranformers" look. Also popular with them - the PF Flyer front end look, with or without a Kenworth styled and sized grill.

How can a CD problem not be covered under warranty?

Either a cruddy warranty or an owner oversight. I told him if it was me in the same spot he was in the radio would be fixed for free before I left the lot. I believe personally the service manager told him it wasn't covered and he went home with his tail between his legs without pursuing it further.

The fix for those 'flaring' transmissions has been out for quite awhile. Some trannies were replaced.

There is a reflash for that engine that greatly improves output.

Perhaps your daughter's car should visit a dealership.

It must be the dealer who told him that. There's no way a new car should be able to leave the lot with an obviously defective radio. He should contact Toyota directly.
