I have spent a couple of nights on this froum searching and will ask the expert's a few questions. I Live in Anchorage ,AK and drive less than 10 miles to wrok in the mornings. I have a 2007 Nissan Titan V-8 with 5k miles on it. It was bought in March. I just switched to M1 Truck and SUV with a Napa gold filter. I plan On doing Oil changes every 5k or 6 months. Does this combo seem good. I make a couple of short trips around the base 2 and I want to make sure my truck is protected as possible. What would the experts do? Cold weather is coming and we see-10 pretty reguarly down to -18F. I'm not trying to start a which oil is better fight but want to know if this the best cobo for my setup. Thanks in advance

Go with a 0w-20 or 5w-20 synthetic next winter if your limited use is the same then. You never reach anywhere near a 30 weight with shorter trips.

He only drives 5 miles... Even if he drove 10 in his winter ..he'd be pumping a 40 weight....

It's exactly what I would use if it were mine in that service.

The short trip s are only during the week. I drive on base alot too with speeds around 30-50. On the weekends the truck see's family duty and gets a little more driving. I'm a little hesitant to use anything other than factroy recommendations due to warranty issues. I might try 0w30 In January when it's good and cold to see if it makes a difference.

AFmedic,

Don't be in big hurry to drop your current oil - get your $'s worth out of it. If your concerned about warranty just stick with what you have. This exact oil will be my winter oil. Temps in my area drift down to an occasional below zero and do spend a fair amount of time in single digits and teens.

In the Mobil 1 line compare the viscosity number between your current oil and M1 0-30 - seems marginal to me.

M1 5-w-30 is often priced at $19.xx or close to that at China- Mart in a 5 quart jug. $4 a quart for a -54 pour point.

Once your out of warranty experiment with the others.

Yes, you're doing just fine, AFmedic...but to expand

There's a unspoken notion that there's some "fear" of using a 20 weight due to your weekend excursions..or just because "it says so".

..yet there's a blind ignorance to your use of a 30 weight if you were stationed in Texas ...or if you were towing ..the latter would not alter your OEM viscosity recommendations ..but probably would alter your length of OCI AND will surely reduce your visc to a 20 weight.

By all means, satisfy your warranty "fear". It's not true paranoia since it has some "real" basis for being there....but just ponder what others seem a bit blind to in "practical realities".

Oddly, I'm on the use of my first Amsoil "oil". HDD is in my 4.0 jeep engine since I just sent my last 5w-20 PP experiment sample off to Terry. I've used the filters for a long time as well as the fuel system cleaner.

The complications of having an oil shrine and curiosity that delays the conversion process

..and furthermore ..

Although I would be pleased as punch to sell anyone and everyone Amsoil products, I never "push" anything. I'm also not here as JUST an Amsoil rep. I was the 409th member here (402 due to software changes) and have experimented with plenty of oils in various weights ..some of which aren't even offered by Amsoil ..and wouldn't be practical in any affordable manner for the limited duration that I used them.

I've used
Delvac 1
RTS
Agip
PP 5w-20
PZ 5w-40 Euro
Delo 10w(20)
PZ Long Life 10w, 10w-30, 15w-40
MotorCraft
..as well as custom blended oils for experiments..

So, while I'll say that Amsoil makes top tier synthetic oils that can offer many people outstanding value and superior performance (I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it), it doesn't stop me from pondering other aspects of lubrication and cashing the checks that my rhetoric writes. My interest is far beyond "just marketing".

If you think you're stuck with 5w-30, the thinnest two that we are aware of are Castrol Syntec and Havoline Deposit Shield. The thickest 20w's are Redline, Castrol Syntec, and Castrol GTX.

I'd feel ok using any of those during a winter as you described it.

If you think you may be harming your engine, do a single oil analysis and decide from there.

(Legal Dislaimer: The previous opinion is my own. Void where prohibited by law. Results may vary. I had been a member of the collective but never underwent full assimilation.)

I just put the list up there for comparisons sake, but if you want to recommend an oil that's thinner than the factory's recommended grade, that's your business sir.

Well, it's like OCIs. I don't think anyone really thinks that a service duty causes a "half life" in the condition of the oil ..as though there's some magic line that you cross. It's a "one size fits many" recommendation. It's done that way for practical reasons. You can't make it too complicated for the consumer.

..but if you've got a brain, and can "reasonably reason" ..I don't think that you have to migrate with the herd if you've got special conditions that would be, perhaps, better served with drawing outside the lines.

Thanks for al the good info. I will stick with it and see what happens. I might do an oil sample at 15k to check things out. Thanks all.

Um . . . I'm not even sure I'd want to even run Amsoil 0w-30 under these conditions for 15,000 miles. If it was me, considering the conditions, I would pull a sample in the 5,000 to 7,500 mile range. 15,000 is a bit long under these conditions.

I've run synthetic oil as long as 15,000+ and quite frankly I would not do this again without doing a UOA at the 7,500 mark ever again.

I guess I need to make my post more clear. My plan is to do OCI every 5k no matter what. I will wait till I hit 15k and do a UOA and see how the truck is liking it.

Stick with your plan. Does Elmendorf have an autocraft shop? If not you can use the one at Fort Richardson to do your maintenance.
I spent three years at Fort Wainwright and have worked on vehicles in the field at -60 fahrenheit. Chevron Delo 400 synthetic 0W-30 worked well for us, but any good synthetic 5W-30 will be fine for you.
We also used oil pan, engine block, and battery heaters. Military vehicles had all that plus swingfire heaters.
