Is Royal purple worth the extra $$?

IMO...Great Oil IF you can get it at a good price. Not too long ago, Amazon had a clearance on the RP, SL with Synerlec technology. They were clearing out the Gallon Jugs of RP, SL in 5w30 and 10w30 at a really GREAT price. Amazon really treated me well with a couple of Gallon Cases of 5w30 for a lot less than any of the other top shelf M1, PU, Castrol, Valvoline etc.....synthetics. I've used up most of the stash in neighbors vehicles but still have a couple of gallons left for the summer.

Now I'm running GC, 0w30, API-SL, 4 Quarts and 2 Quarts of RL, 5wt, Racing for my winter blend. What a smooth combo!

For myself,it fits my application perfectly,I run the Royal Purple 5w30HPS oil.

Their recommendation for the HPS series oils is 15,000 miles or one year which ever comes first.

When I can get PP for ~$20/5L on sale ... RP doesn't even catch my eye.

The real question is if it's worth it to you.

^^^ this; OP you are the ONLY one who can decide.

I agree. And I also feel that RP:

1. Performs better than its detractors will ever admit that it does. Ever.
2. Performs not as well as Redline oil, previously cited as a strong candidate for a "best" oil,
3. Will never shake its reputation as a joke to some, due to its purple dye (that wears off,) and
4. Is a touch pricey.

Honestly, I even MIX the RP with some RL.

No RP is not worth it after see the results from PQIA.

Tier 1: Redline
Tier 2: Mobil 1 Extended Performance/0-w40, German Castrol
Tier 3: Castrol, Pennz, Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Quaker State Ultimate, Super Tech then Royal Purple

Do you have a link to the test results? I'd be interested to see their conclusions..

Thanks

I have used RP products for decades and have had nothing but excellent results with it. On BITOG it is the red-haired stepchild of oils and never gets a fair shake though.

Whether it is the color( who really cares ), the price( this is vastly overstated on this site - can be had for very competitive pricing if you look around at places other than the 5qt jug aisle at Wal-Mart ), or the foolishness that used to go on here with bashing it because it was SL and not SM only to see the same folks turn around and bash it when it became SN because it is no longer SL w/ Synerlec bashing RP never ends at BITOG. It is the in thing here to do( i.e. bash RP ).

I have posted good used oil analysis with it too. People used to claim there were tons of bad used oil analysis with it but that is one [censored] line here at BITOG that has finally gone away as it is 100% untrue. I think the thing that gets me the most is all the bashing on this site from people who have NEVER used it but yet they can make claims about it's quality. You would think a site about oil would be a good place to ask but in reality this is the last place you should ask about RP. Instead visit car forums and get feedback from actual users.

Only you can decide if it is worth the money. For me it always has been. It is an excellent product line made by a very good company. I have used pretty much every product they make and they have all performed very well for me.

This is a topic where you'll get lots of opinions and no facts. Here's mine: Yes if it can be had for the sale prices one would typically pay for Castrol, Mobil, or Pennzoil synthetic oils, to name a few. In my opinion it isn't worth a premium price. Savvy shoppers can get good deals on it, just not as often as the others. There's nothing wrong with the product though.

It is a gimmick oil
So you are overpaying for this so you can tell your friends
It costs 12-15 bucks more per jug than most other quality syn and nobody has shown why

Now see, this is the kind of stuff that gets people who use it upset.

Gimmick oil? Overpaying to brag about it? Just lame. As I stated, I have used it for years with excellent results and I posted used oil analysis here backing it up. I also do not pay more for it vs. other oils but as usual people just assume RP is way more expensive OR they assume the 5qt jug aisle at Wal-Mart is the ONLY place to buy oil. It truly gets laughable it is so sad.

Well OK, but how is it better than say, Mobil 1? You have good results yes, but would they have been not so good had you used another top-tier synthetic?

I think the use of the word gimmick relates to the higher price. Yes, you can get it cheaper than the price at Walmart, but can you get it cheaper than M1 at Walmart? If it is "better" than M1, is the price differential worth it?

And as much as you don't wish to discuss it, the color is a gimmick. It's part of the name and therefore is part of the marketing/brand. And it is immaterial, of course.

Apparently Royal purple is based right outside Houston here.

Anyone want to see if they will possibly submit to a BITOG challenge to claim/disclaim any of the claims made?

Lmao!

Exaggerate much?

This is getting funny. Worth the extra is all a personal thing. As for people claiming this oil is better than that oil, there are no facts - just opinion as has been said many times over.

My bet is SuperTech conventional changed at a normal interval will have your engine long outlast your car. I am yet to still hear a true story about any oil causing an engine to go south.

If you like RP or any other oil and are cool with the price, go for it. There are more things to worry about than that. The oil choice will not kill your vehicle.

I say gimmick because it is marketed as something that is way better than the competition without any proof
It just has a dimes worth of purple dye that does not mean anything except as a way to be different
This is all ok but I wont pay extra for dye
I know their are sales and rebates but for just off the shelf prices they are way too pricey
You can spend your money any way you wish
So can I
