Is M1 0W40 still the BITOG favourite?

I find it interesting how in European gasoline engines BITOG
1. Preferred Castrol Euro 0w30
2. Preferred M1 0w40
3. Preferred Castrol 0w40

It looks like people did a 180 degree turn because of how similar Castrol 0w40 is to Castrol Euro 0w30.

The other thing that got my attention was people paying attention to manufacturer specific approvals.
VW/Audi guys knew Shell RT6 didn't meet VW502, VW505, or VW505.01 but it was used in numerous VW and Audi engines. Using it in a gasoline or diesel VW/Audi engine always resulted in great UOA scores and engine life.
When the new M1 0w40 came out and didn't meet BMW LL-01, BMW owners quickly looked for something else. I don't recall BMW BITOG-ers using any non-BMW approved oil.

The R35 Nissan GT-R was built with M1 0w40 and has the recommendation on the oil cap. I don't know if any BITOG-er has an R35 GT-R or they know someone who does.

I'm glad Mitsubishi doesn't have any unique oil specifications, so I just use Castrol 0w40 without thinking about it much.

I am not sure when T6 was favorite oil of Euro owners although SOME used it.
However, I would say 90% of Euro owners are using oil that first and foremost meets specification they need.
As for GT-R I would say that is marketing more then actual specification as no one ever saw Nissan GT-R specification requirements.

I didn't say T6 was specifically popular with Euro users. I said it was popular with VW and Audi owners. I said nothing about people who had a BMW or Benz.

I drove VW Passat 1.8T and VW CC 2.0T and I am active on Vortex etc. and impression I had is that GC 0W30 was always favorite one, especially during original "green" formula.
But T6 is used in Euro applications, Subaru's etc. and it is OK oil.
Same goes for BMW gassers.

M1 has a huge fan base. Most of those folks will run it under any and all circumstances.

I was never an M1 fan due to cost early on. I always assumed that well made dino oils could do the trick as well as long as you didn't try to push them beyond say 6,000 miles or so.

Then I got a BMW and temporarily drank the cool aid. But my beemer was not so critical of oil as I thought. As the M1 was depleted in my stash, I started using other oils. It really was quite happy on Rotella T6, so that's where it stayed until I sold it.

Then along came the Saab 2.3t which specifies "synthetic" under most conditions. But at 100,000 I thought I'd experiment. The Saab was not happy with M1. Cold start rattles and noises. Didn't like the Rotella T6 too mush either. Was very happy with Delo400LE though.

As usual, I don't let public perception dictate oils. Rather I use what the motor seems happiest with. What supplies cold start quietness and smooth operation. Quick turbo response, etc. The Delo has been working well for many 10's of thousands of miles now.

So, bottom line, I tried M1 a few times and found others I liked better. Your results will vary I'm sure. But any good oil is just that. Listen to the motor and it will tell you what it wants

I agree with BrocLuno. Pay attention to which oil the engine likes best. I had people tell me that the Ducati would blow up if I did not use the best group 4 or 5 synthetic. In reality, it really likes the Rotella 15W40 with frequent changes.

Its not about being BITOGs favourite the lack of reponse from XOM to some enquiries by users of the oil has been disappointing. Ignoring enquiries sends a message.

Any way plenty of others to choose from.

XOM probably thinks their customers know nothing about oil.

My Infiniti runs great on M1 0W40. I haven't tried the new formulation yet but wouldn't hesitate to, especially with the rebates floating around.
