Is M+H quality back up again now?

I used to use Wix filters a lot, but then in the past couple of years here there were photos posted of cut-open Wix and other M+H brand filters with not so hot looking media, and even catastrophic failures like the seam where the base plate and canister meet actually separating and leaking oil in service.

Because of these issues, I've avoided M+H filters for awhile. But I cut open an M+H made motorcycle filter open recently and it looked absolutely flawless. Nice metal crimp, straight pleats, no separation of the metal end caps from the media. It looked great.

Is Mann+Hummel quality back to what it used to be? Or are Wix/Purolator/etc still having the same issues that we saw before?

Not all M+H filters are bad; you're just more likely to run into a defective filter as it seems that QC has taken a back seat.

What was the production date on your filter?

The Wix made in Mexico filters could be better, and there have been reports of Chinese made ones. Not worth the money over Premium Guard, IMO. Coasting on the brand name loyalty…

Purolator did have some tearing issues that is mostly a non issue these days IMO. Some WIX premium filters now feature Purolator's "Smart Fusion" reinforced backing. I've not had any issues using M+H products but the old era's take a long time to die IE: Orange Can naming that is still around even to this day even though Fram is a better product today for example. I will note that Mobil 1 does have some quality control issues that have been posted here lately out of Mexico but their was a flawless example posted today or yesterday as well. Perhaps more of a hit or miss with Mobil 1? Does M+H even make Mobil 1?

This one goes out to the veterans that remember these filters...
Filter was in use for about 5k and 8 months in the 04 Corolla, filtering Mobil Super5000 10W-30. Mostly short tripped.
Even though it sat draining for more than 2 months, it was still full of oil.
The only thing I see wrong with it is the beginning of a tear near the seam, it's in the photos.

Posted a failed 212A a few months ago from a buddy's silverado. This M1 212A is off another buddy's 14 Ford Explorer 3.5L V6 naturally aspirated.

Never held anything against these filters just bought them because my other favorite wasnt available at the time.

I'm glad this was a short change and not a 20k run on this filter.

Good Afternoon BITOGERS. This piece of filth was off my daily driver 11’ Focus base model car. Had it along with some older filters I’m slowly getting around to cutting open. Bought car in 2022 day before Labor Day weekend. They say they did oil change using Toyota synblend 5w20 and this. I never saw that documented at all. Took filter and nasty oil out of sump that weekend. Vehicle since then has had HPL NO VII 5w20 and Fram ultra filters but now has Donaldson P 55132 “lube filter” on.

So, basically this filter was on my car for god knows how long. Shame on the...

Good Morning BITOGERS. This filter was on my porch in a cardboard box wrapped real well. All was wrote was “4,200 miles with unknown bulk 5w20”. I’m guessing it’s for a XG 3614 app like some fords or….


Shame that this piece of filth is cheap and Made in Mexico; haha, yeah quality isn’t a priority.

Good Morning BITOGERS. THIS filter and whatever bulk oil the quick change place used were in and on a 2021 Fford Ecosport for 6,xxx miles. Put in Safety Kleen 5w30 blend and a PZ-21 filter. This filter is garbage as we can all see.

Friends car. Filter in use 7,800 miles on a 2015 Subaru Legacy with FB25 engine. Filter was on pretty tight and the filter wrench dug into it a bit, but the media was not torn from that

Came home friday, this filter was on my porch in a ziploc bag. I’m guessing either was on a Subaru, Nissan or….? Few friends of mine have Subaru that’s older as in early 2000’s and one co worker has 06 Nissan Sentra. Write on bag said “4K with PP 5w30”. Shame that it tore near seam. UNACCEPTABLE

This is off of 2019 F250 with 51,000 miles on it. The filter was in use for 3 months and 6,000 miles. I switched our fleet over to Baldwin when I noticed the Motorcraft filters tearing. I guess these aren’t any better.

Only had like 2,344 miles on it (he’s retired) and it still looks like . As you can see in next to last pic, pleat is torn away a bit.

I put some M1 5w20 and a older made in USA WIX longer filter. Vehicle has almost 78,220 on odometer.

Here is a friends filter that I cut for him. Was purchased though a ford dealership where he works. At first glance it seemed fine with the typical wavy pleats. But when I looked closer I could see that the crimped end of the filter media was not sealed. You could see the metal inner tube. It’s open from end to end. It was used on a gen 3 coyote truck with a shorter interval (no more then 5k miles). I also noticed that the oval holes in the baseplate are sharp on the inside where they press against the adbv. It seemed fine though as there were no tears in the adbv as I have seen before on...

What was the production date on your filter?

I have no idea, but it was installed this past May or June, so it likely was manufactured at least in 2023.

If you want better efficiency and solid construction at a decent price, checkout the carquest Premium (blue label) filters at Advance Auto Parts or Carquest stores. Been lots of C&Ps of them here.

Since the AAP/CQ price increase, it may be a good idea to check prices on some of the other PG EX filter suppliers, too-some chains by me have been running specials, like 20% off or better, that will make their prices lower than AAP. For instance, Smyth Automotive is running 20% off all month, makes the Parts Plus PH48EX $6.95 each, & it's the same filter as the CQ Blue 84060. Or RA has the PG2222EX for $5.10 plus shipping.
