I picked up 4 litres of 'Honda' 0w20 today. It says on the bottle 'ultra low viscosity'. The back says '....blended specifically for Honda fuel efficient vehicles.' I assume this means the hybrids. It also says 'Contains special additives to exceed API SM/SL performance and ILSAC GF-4. Reduces wear....provides outstanding high temperature protection.'

Anyway, the parts guy 'thinks' it's made by Petro Canada. As far as I know Petro-Canada doesn't market and 0w20 oil. Anyway, it was $6.99 CDN vs $9.99 CDN for the 'Honda Full Synthetic 5w20'.

I'm curious as to whether it's possible to have a 0w20 made from conventional oil, or whether the $6.99 is a semi-good deal for a synthetic 0w20.

FWIW, the oil smells kind of sweet..reminds me of XD-3/GC smell as opposed to a bottle of Quaker State 5w20 dino I recently smelled that was kind of rotten egg smelling.

I don't believe a 0w20 can be made unless it has at least some Group III/IV in it. bruce might be able to plug some values into his blending calculator and tell you for sure.

It's probably possible - but 0W-20 was intended for new state-of-the-art flex-fuel & electric blend engines. Synthetic covers the engine heat factor better than dino. I'm guessing these engines can/do get hot in a hurry.

Actually, my experience with hybrids tends to think they running cooler than other cars since they are designed for minumum friction. This is why 0w-20 is used. We have a 2000 Honda Insight that was started on Honda dino 0w-20 and then switched to synthetic Mobil 1 0w-20 a couple years later. Honda uses good oil and it should be fine if you follow the drain intervals. Then again, if you can find good oil for cheaper, take that route.

I use a combination of the two. I use one litre of Mobil 1 0W20 and fill the rest with Mobil 5000 5W20. The car has been purring with this blend.

I spoke to a very helpful tech guy at Petro-Canada who passed on the following information:

Petro-Canada supplies all the bulk oil to Honda and Acura here in Canada (all weights - synthetic and conventional) as well as the bottled oil that proudly says 'Honda' on it.

The only oil they don't supply is the 0w20, which he says is made by a company called IDEMITSU (he did say they supply some base oils to Idemitsu). He also told me Petro Canada does make a 0w20 synthetic, but it is not marketed commercially, only sold to manufacturers that request it. When asked why Honda doesn't use it, he said they have some 'different' qualifications for their 0w20 that the Petro-Canada 0w20 doesn't meet.

His take on the Honda 0w20 is that it is a synthetic blend since it is only $6.99 as opposed to the full synthetic which is $9.99.

The problem I had was finding ANY 0w20 here in Canada. I don't think Mobil offers it up here any more.

We had P.P. here in Chatham, Ontario for a month or two then Walmart did not purchase a second shipment. They said it wasn't selling. The 24 litres they initially got in were gone quickly.
Canadian Tire has carried Mobil 1 0W20 for the fast few years as well. If it is not on the shelf they can order for you - they did for me.
