I say no. It's not like Facebook or TicTok or Twitter.

It's goal is an informational forum. No one makes $$ off my posts like Zuckerberg does on Facebook.

Most of the posts are answering a question of how to do something on a car. Not a picture of my dinner plate at a restaurant.

It’s a form of social media, but censored to the categories that are listed, as just posted they do not want news items in here. I never knew that before and I think it’s a gray area, seems a bit arbitrary.
I was surprised the recent major national news event was not allowed. Not that I disagree. They could do whatever they want, but I never really saw a news item like that not allowed but then again it only happens every 50 years or so.

Either way it’s still social media

I'm not sure why it matters, but no, IMHO it's not social media. Media is: news, newspapers, magazines, videos, facebook and twitter are social media. This is just a forum, a discussion board.

Mirriam-Webster says BITOG is a form of social media:

I sure hope not. If BITOG fits in the same category as Facebook and such, I will need to seriously reconsider being a member here. And I love BITOG.

Personally, I don't see it anywhere near the same as social media. Rather, it is an automotive technology support group. And in the process of helping each other with such things, we develop friendships with each other. But that is secondary to why we are here. Or at least, why I am here.

When I retire this is the limits of computer interaction I want to experience.

It's more like a classic bulletin board than a modern day social media site.

If you know me, you know where to find me. I don't need social media for anything beyond commerce.

Since some seem confused.

We don't allow political, religious or sexual topics on BITOG. It's part of the rules and policies of this private forum, where one must be a member to post, and must agree to those rules to become a member.

BITOG isn't what I consider social media, in that we have standards.

No matter the occasional member that attempts to bring that cesspool experience here.

This wouldn't even be the first time the OP has brought up the topic ... Similar conversation here from less than a year ago:

Regardless if you consider BITOG "social media" or not, it won't change how we run this site. The owner has expectations of Conduct and Content which are clearly expressed in our rules and policies. Follow those and all is good; go off course and consequences are often swift and severe.
