It really depends upon what the instant coffee is.
At home, we have a drip machine that makes pretty good coffee.
When traveling, most US hotel rooms will have either a single serve drip maker or maybe a Keurig or Nespresso in a higher end property. In Europe, you'll probably have an electric kettle, which on 200 VAC heats water really fast and little tubes of instant coffee that is actually pretty good.
I do not otherwise drink instant coffee.

Attempt at Humor: Are we differentiating between instant and freeze dried?
A pal 2 doors away, who worked for Maxwell House in Hoboken, told me that as a chemist, he worked on concocting the aroma which greeted the customer when the seal on a new jar of instant coffee was broken.
I always thought instant coffee was an easy vehicle in which to hide evil chemicals.

The only instant in a total trapped, jailed, locked up, hostage, bind, rationed, pinch are the Starbucks little tubes. And only half a tube. It's drinkable.
Most grocery stores carry Starbucks Via individual serving packets (8 packets in a box). However, for the price, you could probably buy a whole jar of loose instant coffee.
My dad drinks Jacobs Kronung instant stuff. It's OK, but it still tastes like instant. Some people swear by it though.
Good suggestion, if you're making a typical 6-8 oz cup.
Yeah, I’m convinced that a lot of people who say they “don’t like coffee” (like my sister and my mom, who both dump flavored coffeemate into their Keurig coffee) have just never tasted actual, good, coffee.
Despite my having given them both cups of pourover, I think they just have a mental block against black coffee that they can’t overcome and learn to like it.
When I first started drinking coffee more than 23 years ago, I also put cream & sugar into it. Most often at Starbucks I’d put 2 “sugar in the raw” and half & half.
But then I recognized that some people drank their coffee black, and I thought to myself that there must be something to it, plus, I also realized that the cream & sugar I was adding to the coffee didn’t do me any favors, health-wise, so I made up my mind to learn to enjoy coffee black.
And I never looked back.
I eventually moved on from Starbucks to light roasted coffee which actually allows one to experience the sometimes unique flavors of the varietal and the terroir.
So I guess I’ve always just been a curious enough person that, when I hear that people enjoy a certain food or drink that might not, at first, sound good, I think to myself that there “must be something to it”.
I guess some people (like mom & sis) just can’t overcome that mental block and they’ll just always suffer through bad coffee, holding their noses and dumping in massive quantities of flavoring, just to use it as a caffeine delivery method.
I say, at that point, you may as well just buy NoDoz pills. And I do know people who do just that.

I wrote off instant coffee decades ago. I did , however, experience a surprisingly decent instant years ago. Guy I worked with gave me a few of those little paper tubes of Starbucks instant. I'm not a fan of Starbucks...but the stuff was actually pretty good. Don't know if they even make it anymore.
I think starbucks instant is pretty decent too. On par with in store Tim Hortons, Starbucks, McDonalds, for me anyways. Especially if you are going dark roast, then they all get pretty equal in my mind. They don't all taste the same, but I can't say I've had a dark roast that really stands out.
A trip to a Costa Rica coffee plantation got me into lighter roast coffees, which I now appreciate more.
Anyways, for a regular weekday morning, Nescafe Gold Medium is pretty good IMO. On the weekend I might grind up some beans for the french press, but I'm not really that picky on what I drink as long as its in the "pretty decent" range or better.
I drink Nescafe Classic regular of decaf instant coffee in packets. I like the Mexican ones - I've tried coffee made in many different countries and the best are the Russian and Mexican are the second in my preference. The worst, surprisingly, have been the Swiss made packets.

My version of almost instant coffee is roasting each bean by hand with a magnifying glass on noon sunny days, then hand grinding each bean, weighing each to the .01 gram in the process then extract 1 gloopy drop at a time.

Interesting, but in my memory some of the best coffee I can remember was in diners that had that huge coffee brewer with the glass tube running up the front, but that was a while ago. At the hospital we had the large BUNN brewers with two carafes, have no idea what brand coffee but sure tasted good. Hospital staff literally lives on caffeine.
