Industrial Society and It's Future

I like working in an office.
I enjoy the flirtatious women, I like my nice office/cave, and I enjoy crunching numbers.
OTOH, I also get satisfaction out of splitting wood, building a nice fire in the fireplace, and growing vegetables.
It does not have to be either/or.

His manifesto, simply stated, says that we're not mature enough for our capabilities.

Our daily life clearly proves that this is true. We don't manage our knowledge and abilities along the lines of excellence in conduct. We don't manage our resources in truly sensible manners. We don't make the society wide/species wide benefit the main focus of our technological advancements.

We're way too clever for such a flawed animal. Far too self and collaterally destructive.

Some of us are not mature enough for our capabilities.
Others revel in the ease with which we can live, but do not lose sight of how grateful we should be for the good fortune we enjoy.
Self destrution, at the personal and community level comes from either a lack of long-term goals, or an excess of hubris, or some combination of the two.
I beleive that this starts at the individual level, and that it is silly to blame either "society" or "the system", since both are merely the aggregate of all of us as individuals.
As individuals, we can strive to do the right thing.
If enough people realize that what they choose to think and do really does determine the outcome, then maybe we can escape the fate that has ended societies existing long before ours.

Good post. Food for thought.

"blaming" is inappropriate. It just is what it is ..and it is not working to the benefit of humankind. That clearly proves that however our contemporary civilization is developing, that knowledge and capability is outpacing wisdom. As a species, we have not learned from our mistakes beyond getting more clever at making newer and more improved mistakes.

That is what I believe the manifesto stated..and I think it's correct.

That doesn't mean that I in any way endorse his method of bring his view to the public arena. As we can see, he's ancient history to most people and just another kook who had his xx number of days of fame and folly ..and, like most, fade into non-consequence of merit.

What don't you understand? Break it down line by line if you need to.

Essentially, give your kid a teaspoon and tell him he needs to move the mound of dirt a quarter mile to eat well, or hand him raw turnips for doing nothing. That's how challenging life is for some people and you wonder why they'll opt for raw turnips.

If everyone wanted to work for a living today, how many would be losers and deadbeats? Is everyone unemployed a loser or a deadbeat? If they were all Albert Einstein's ...which one would be sitting there as a pathetic loser that is being a useless eater?

Was that easier to understand? It comes down to how low you want your society to go. Those who are gifted and motivated will still be gifted and motivated. They will still be rewarded for ambition and achievements. I think that Albert Einstein would have done his research for nothing and many would have loved to have him freeload as their guest.
