Impressed with Fram!

Hey Everyone,

So we have one of those Toyota 4 cylinder engines where the filter kind of points base-down, and for years I have never really found an oil filter that would keep the oil inside of it overnight, whether nitrile rubber or silicone rubber drain back valve. So one day while doing an oil change on Sunday, I waltzed into the local wal-mart, beacause the parts stores were closed and all I could manage to find was Frams. I grabbed an oversized tough guard model for the first time, and went home a little disappointed. Finished the job, and over te next few days doing morning start ups I've noticed the oil pressure light goes out in the time most other cars do, instead of the 1-2 full seconds normally expected of this engine. I mean, the oil presure builds up so fast that I never get the "dry rattle" anymore! This is so cool, I've never found another oil filter to have a anti drain back valve seal so well! I am actually very impressed with the Fram TG and my long time bias I think is cured! They really can't be that bad after all, and for this car it's gonna be Fram TG all the way. Just thought I'd share this nice surprise with you guys, and would encourage you all to give it a shot if your filter is mounted base-side down and your pressure takes a while to build up

what Model and engine? Maybe the newer oil formulation you might be using has an effect too. I have experienced bad adbv on all brands, but best luck with Wix and AC delco non-ecore. Had biggest issues with the service part Denso (made in Thailand), and it looks very well made.

It's a Camry with the 2.2L. The oil is Valvoline conventional 10w30. Before it was Supertech 10w30. I'm almost positive the filter has made the difference, because no other filter of the many types over the years has ever kept the oil in it overnight. Maybe I got lucky and got a good one, I'll update on the next change when I get another toughguard

Honestly they can't really be BAD filters since they are marketed and sold all the time. Just the cardboard end caps make most people in the know steer clear of them for long OCI's. I have run FRAM TG on my girlfriends 98 taurus with 250k miles on it (autozone oil + filter deals) and have never had an issue with 3500 mile OCI's.

Does anyone else love the color orange so much that they are just down right disappointed FRAM has such a bad rep? I know all about the "media" endcaps and problems with the extra guard and TG suckers, but hey its orange! Just my silliness of the day

. Of courseeeee the seemingly "ok" TG AND proven-awesome Xteneded guard aren't orange. Bast***s! All bias aside, they really do have awful price points for their products. It would be like Chevy pricing an Aveo 10% lower than an Impala...or something like that.

Glad to hear FRAM has 1 satisfied customer.

Posting this makes me want to spray paint my purolator pureone filter casings orange...just because I can. Yellow? PSHHH...It's all about the O-range.

Thing that disappoints me is the price for what you get.
I cut open a big PH16 Extraguard to find out it only has about 118 square inches of total filter media in it. Shoot, I get almost that much (about 100 in sq) in the little Wix 51348 I use on my little pickup.
The funny thing is the PH16 is like 3.6" in diameter and 3.7" tall; the Wix is about 3" in diameter and 3.4" tall.
A big, seemingly empty can was what I got.

But if it's working for you, then, excellent.

Have to agree with you there, especially when if you keep your eyes open you can pick up deals like 6 Purolator pureones for $6

Plus I picked up 4 motorcraft FL400S filters for my girlfriends Taurus at $1.50/filter yesterday.

I used Frams for ever with no ill effects to my knowledge, No i never cut one open. I switched to pure ones after all the talk i read on here.. in the past couple of years i have used a fram TG in a pinch.. seemed very robust to me.. i have a stack of pure ones in the garage now, but i wouldnt be afraid to spin a TG on my truck.

wow great story i personally dont use fram because i cut a few apart and did not like what i saw but i will say owning an engine shop i see engines here with every filter made and i never saw as far as i know an engine destroyed by a fram filter i did see a number of filters that blew apart but that was not the filters fault and none were frams as far as i can remember.

Those were both with the orange Frams. I run the TG`s now and couldn`t be more satisfied.

I would never hesitate to say I'm a Fram user-I use what works for me.
Everytime you pick up a loaf of bread in the store, do you count the number of slices? Do you count the number of potato chips in a Wise bag vs Lays? ---Noooo you buy the brand of bread or potato chips you like, regardless of if it is the best value or not.
The micro-examination of Fram filters, IMO is just plain foolish

lol right.. I was in a pinch and had to use an OCOD. Later that week my f*cking wheel fell off. never running a orange can again.

It doesn't take a micro exam to raise questions with Fram filters. Bottom line is, I want to feel confident in the build quality of my oil fiter, and I want a good price. Most of the "good price" fram filters don't meet the build standards of the gang here.
