Im really impressed with Taylor Swift gives out 55 million in bonuses at the end of her tour

This whole thread made me think back to Paris Hilton getting really annoyed when she scraped her Bentley on a trash can. She didn’t strike me as a person who would care if truckers were away from their families for 24 weeks…

In my office is a young girl who talks about her all day long. I’ve come to realize she and Swifties are every bit as loyal to TS, as Deadheads to their band.
By coincidence I've run into Taylor or Swifties twice. The first was at Philly airport when I got lost in some back hallway trying to find my way from a distant terminal to my car in another terminal. Taylor was out in the hallway on the phone. First thing I noticed is how tall and beautiful she is. Secondly, I saw that it was Taylor Swift. She had a look of concern that she was in a remote hallway with a strange man approaching. Then she realized I recognized her, was not a weird fan, and not a threat. She smiled, gave a little pinky wave, I waved back, and was on my way.

Just recently, my wife and I went to Live! casino in Philly saw there was an event in the area because the parking that is usually free was now $35. We noticed they were playing all Taylor Swift music. Then we saw there were a lot of women wearing Taylor Swift shirts. A google search showed that Taylor Swift was in concert at the nearby stadium. All the Swifties we saw were very nice people that brought a nice fun vibe and smelled better than some hippie girls I met at Dead shows.

I'd be upset if I scraped my Bentley, too. I think you'd be more upset if Paris didn't get upset about the scrape.

90 Million dollar contract is "only" ~50 million in your pocket. So he gave away about 20% of his on-ice take home earnings.

That can get pretty nasty as a tax write-off. The really crazy thing is just all the tax filings required, where it's based on pay credited to each state. Keeps tax preparers busy filing all those different state taxes. Not sure if donations would be arranged to maximize the tax benefit. And of course really complicated when it's across national boundaries.

A perfect example what happens when a person gets to the point where they think they have more $$ than they'll ever need.

It also helps that this particular tour has broken some records (ex. $1B in ticket sales)

It is very kind of her for sure, regardless of whether it is "fake" or genuine from her heart, it helps those in need.

Does she get something back in return? Of course. PR at work for sure and it is definitely part of the calculation in how much to give. Does other companies / celebs do that? Sure, they also get something out of it. I don't see that as a bad thing as this mutual benefits help the one really in need.

My take on this is, she could say no to it but she did give that out, and it helps people, that's good enough for me. It didn't change my opinion of her (not a fan of her music).

I wish TicketMaster would do more charity than gouging off the monopoly.

Yea I guess it’s a giant write off and a huge boon to the recipients but the motivation behind it will never be known. The tax preparers are the only sure winners.

Don’t worry. The IRS only has a dozen or so auditors working multi million dollars like this one. The other half a dozen or so are busy trying to figure out if you’re claiming your 500 square feet of home office space correctly .

I just thought to myself (yeah, I think too much)
So you guys are never impressed by acts of charity because you would never have known about it. ;)

Like Ooprah giving away stuff.

Or like a certain person who will be nameless but everyone knows of him. He saw a man sitting on the sidewalk and stopped to talk to him. That man had fallen on hard times through no fault of his own. The person gave him money to get cleaned up and told him to return the next day. That man got a job and still works for this person. This happened many years ago. No media around and the story was never revealed until a few years ago.

I don't like her music, and never will. That is not an insult, just a subjective matter of taste. However, after reading about this, I do respect her and am impressed.
My wife and I feelings as well, EXACTLY as you stated it.
Though I never will say never but we were not into her music for so long, like forever, that I haven't listened. Maybe I will now though, just out of curiosity to see what it is that other people like.

I'm young enough to have certainly heard of her and it's not like she's "new" - she's been around for a good number of years and been successful. That said, I couldn't name a song of hers.... Mentioned this to my wife recently (Swift was nearby in Cincinnati for 2 sold-out shows) and she responded "you know some of her songs", which I guess I do, meaning I've heard some before. I tend not to listen to "pop" or "country" as both are fake and fabricated (usually written by "professional songwriters" and the music is written to fit a very specific theme).

My perspective, based on my personal opinions and admitted biases ...

Pros:
- she's incredibly talented; a great entertainer, writer, performer, musician, etc
- she's very generous with her money, obviously
- she's reportedly polite to everyone, as far as we can tell

Cons:
- she's fake; she claims "country" roots, but actually grew up in suburbia in PA
- she's very anti-2A
- she's not the role model now that she was when she was younger (young girls emulate what they see, and Swift has "matured" into a much more provocative performer). She's not a skank by any means, but she's not as wholesome as she was, either

My daughter is a Swifty; I've had to tolerate her music for more than a decade. Now that my daughter is out of the house, it's no longer a problem because it's no longer played in my house, my truck or my life.

When did she claim country roots? It's well known that she grew up outside of Philly. Lots of money to be made in country music.

She's not running for office so she can have her political opinions. I'm pro 2A but I think everyone wants less gun violence.

She's 33 years old. Of course she's matured from when she was in her early 20s. She's not a Christian music star and hasn't been using the wholesome persona for a long time.

And on the pro side, she's a Philadelphia EAGLES fan. Go Birds!

...
She pursued her country career in Nashville,TN and debuted her first album there.

Including the number #1 country song back then -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_Swift_(album)

"Five singles supported Taylor Swift, including the Hot Country Songs number-ones "Our Song" and "Should've Said No", and Swift's first top-15 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, "Teardrops on My Guitar". Swift promoted the album through social network Myspace, which journalists found atypical for a country musician's marketing strategy. She embarked on a six-month radio tour in 2006, and opened tours for other country artists throughout 2006 and 2007. Critics praised the album's mainstream sensibility and Swift's songwriting at a young age for earnestly depicting adolescent sentiments. Taylor Swift was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2008 Academy of Country Music Awards."

She wouldn't have done this had she known she would have gotten zero news or social media attention.
I "think" I disagree. She did it because she could, because she wanted to, because it made her feel good, and it was the right thing to do.

I work with the uber-wealthy in my very high end aviation job. This much is clear, the ultra wealthy don't give money away, unless they want to. That is because they never "have to". They pay plenty (in other words, generally above average) to the hordes of workers behind the scenes. If they didn't, few would work for them and the agenda would grind to a halt. What makes them want to do so, is a truly superb performance by those who made the things happen.

Let's put it this way, not all wealthy will do something like this. But when they do, it is often through a realization of their goals.

But this is TS too:

Something of note, over the years I've received a few perks. I always remember to say thanks, even if it's just something very minor. I don't feel entitled, and I'm paid well for what I do. My paycheck covers my labor. If it were not so, I'd never stay. Interestingly, of the 50 or so employees who also received perks, about 3 remembered to say thanks. Many feel entitled and believe nothing needs to be said. NONSENSE. Word to the wise, always, always, say thank you for a perk or bonus. Reward the behavior you like.
