If you want to relax- make your home real nice or buy a camper, and don't eat out.....

I'm staying in a hotel tomorrow night. Should be fun. Not sure where we're eating dinner. Ate dinner tonight in a restaurant and it was great. Had tuna tacos, short rib flat bread, and a perfectly cooked cauliflower and carrot varietals assortment.

I don’t want to see a plane or hotel on my time off … past that stage. Had a choice of hotel or apartment for current overseas project … found apartment walking distance from grocery store with bakery

Give me a condo, rental home, etc with a full kitchen any day. It's much easier vs getting everyone rounded up and ready to go out to eat 3x a day, not to mention a helluva lot less expensive !!
Part of the enjoyment of a vacation is experiencing the local food prepared by the locals. If you rather spend part of your vacation time grocery shopping and cooking, more power to you. Just don't think it's most peoples preference.

Interesting as my friend has been saying the same things. Hotels have been a complete mess. He’s even had a room with some “used” items left by the previous guests. It sucks because these are two of the industries taking the beating right now. And from the few friends that went back to work in this intdustry (bartender, cook) the customers have become a whole new kind of nasty. It’s hard to do a good job when people enjoy playing the political Games. My bartender friend has already been attacked, and bottles thrown at her. I myself have been nearly beat up as well. It really makes me not want to be around groups of people any more. I think we will stick to camping this year…….

If someone wants a vacation, they should make their home their vacation place or buy a camper of RV. Going out to dinner, flying, or staying in a hotel is most likely a big step down to what most people have at home.

I checked this morning, I have stayed in over 110 different hotels since 1 JAN 2021. Flew over 170 flight segments, and ate out while doing this. Most of us know flying is a free for all. More sane people at a Wal-mart at midnight on a Friday night than on a commercial flight. But what isn't talked about is the hotels and restaurants while away from home.

I stay at hotels primarily in the Marriott family. Occasional hotels in the Hilton and IHG families also. The market has shifted. The rooms are dirty, missing things, and often can't even flush the toilet. And this is at top branded hotels. The rooms next to my rooms are often people that seem like to act like they are at a Chuck E. Cheese. Don't think I had a sink drain in the past dozen stays.

Between people mistreating the room, and the management unable to maintain the room- it is not crazy. It is just reality. One doesn't even want to sleep on the sheets. And this from a guy who spent many nights just in a sleeping bag on the ground for the past 24 of 27 years (last three years I never slept on the ground- had a office job.

Eating out is just as bad. At Freddy's right now in South Carolina. I like Freddy's... a lot. Ordered the number five meal. One hamburger, one hot dog, and fries. I order plain so should be a easy order. Hot dog came in the bun unheated. I would say uncooked, but commercial hot dogs are cooked at the packaging plant. How can one forget to heat the hot dog before putting it in the bun.

With the above observation- the fix is simple. Build that great outdoor kitchen and patio, and pool, whatever and go out "at home". Make the wonderful family /great room. If you "jones" for traveling, get the RV/ camper. Control your destiny.

absolutely agree! My wife stays home and always has with our boys now 20 & 18. I’ve worked hard and she runs the household. We eat at home every night and have good meals. I bet I can count on my 2 hands the number of times we eat out in a year.

5 years ago we decided we were done camping in a tent and jumped in both feet with a 3/4 ton ram and a 36’ travel trailer. It’s our home on wheels with everything we need. We spend about 20+ nights a year at different places in the Midwest and I spend another half dozen days chasing race cars.

I hate hotels, traveled enough for work so a camper has been awesome!

just my $0.02

We enjoy being home, but we like going on vacations too. Pretty boring, but the wife and I like Florida in February. Saves us time to just fly vs drive.

Not a huge fan of going out to eat nowadays. Our favorite restaurants changed their menus last year and it just isn’t the same. My wife is a good cook and I consider myself one as well. Today we are having smoked chicken.

Different strokes for different folks as others have said… I work 45-55 hours a week, I like going to my house. But I agree… I hate staying in hotels. I feel like I am walking on eggshells trying not to bother anyone else.

I’ve never been on a plane before, and the furthest I’ve been away from home was a ~10 hour drive to Georgia to rent a cabin for a week, which I will gladly do again and again. Georgia in winter (it was 45F but absolutely 0 wind, it felt like 60+ in the sun!) is also very very congested infant approved!

I'll put up with the airlines, and hotels to experience an epic location.

I do try my best to stay at 5 star hotels, rent a luxury car and fly at least business class when on vaca. It makes a huge difference.
Yeah, my SIL was doing quite a bit of business travel this way and now usually flies business class on any longer flights atleast. I would recommend Air New Zealand though, their regular seats and service is very good, and we had no problems crossing the pacific and back with them. Air Canada just across Canada was much less pleasant.
When we did our trip to NZ and Australia we booked far enough ahead that we were stayed in good business class hotels near the airports for reasonable money and they were nice and clean. The rest of the time we took GON's advice and rented smaller camper vans which are a great way to see the wilderness, and way less hassle and cost than doing hotels and restaurants. Even in the cities you could get a nice campground for much less than a decent motel and still be able to drive it in city traffic.

My vacation is any day I'm not at work. Maybe a trip to the city with the kids, maybe a few day visit with family.

We have a little 10 acre property that's a work in progress but its far enough away that no one bugs us. Probably won't be this year but we are planning a nice fire pit and outdoor cook area. Might have to build a smoker or buy a pellet grill as well.
But my vacation is ending as I got work tomorrow.....

Last hotel I stayed at was a holiday inn express. Was ok until I pulled back the blanket and it looked like someone shaved their crotch on the bed.. I knew who the blame belonged to because there was a nice card with the maid's name and how proud of her cleaning job she was.....

Not another room available in town for under 250$ so the manager brought up replacement sheets and I made the bed.. They did give me a small discount and some bonus reward points.

It ain't no vacation if you have to cook on it.
Our vacations are mostly in our RV. My wife is a great cook and loves to cook, even while on vacation. If we can find a good mom and pop restaurant, then we may eat out on occasion, but never eat at chain restaurants. We have a great arrangement, she cooks and I do all the cleanup. I stick with what I'm good at.

If you "jones" for traveling, get the RV/ camper. Control your destiny.
We enjoy traveling in our home on wheels. So many more aspects are controllable vs. staying in a hotel. Owning an RV isn't all roses, as they are a lot of work to tow, park, set up, tear down, clean, and maintain, but to us it is worth the effort.

That's if you are cooking roadkill. Saying Mcdonalds is better than home cooking is laughable.
Hey he was just being honest...
I have ate some truly horrific home cooking before. I cook very well myself but honestly I get tired of everything. I'd be happy if food wasn't a necessity.

Maybe if they opened recently. Most restaurants won't last a year if the food isn't good unless they have deep pockets. They may go once, but a restaurant needs repeat customers to survive.
On opening the food is usually quite good. In time the quality falls off and eventually people find another restaurant.
I must apologize for this text. My vocabulary has deserted me for a while. Sort of expect that at 90.

Fear of flying?
Nope, I think I’d love it… just haven’t had the chance yet. We never really traveled much growing up, and now I’ve got 3 clones of myself! Trying to plan a trip to visit my sister and sister in law out in Washington, definitely flying for that trip lol!
