I am one of those people who gets more and more confused about oil the more I read stuff here it BITOG...

So here goes my question..

If my car is rated 10w30 summer, 5w30 winter, any benefits/harm changing into:

1. 0w30
2. 0w20
3. 0w40

Reason is XD-3 i want to use XD-3, but only found 0w40...GC, I only see 0w30, and 0w20 for curiousity...

TIA!

XD-3 0W-30 is actually more robust than most 5W-30's in terms of SAE viscosity and HTHS viscosity.

Use XD-3 0W-30 without any hesitation whatsoever. The benefits include easier starting, lower cost, longer drain intervals, and reduced startup wear.

626, No. Use analysis to verify your choice so you don't keep guessing.

You don't have to know much when the analysis shows low wear and clean well functioning fluid and engine combo.

XD3 in 0W-40 is available at Canadian Walmarts. The 0W-30 has to be obtained from Imperial - ESSO distributors and usually comes in a 4 pack of 4Litre jugs.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say he has a 98 626LX with the 2.0 4-cyl with an automatic tranny.

I second the XD-3 0w-30 recommendation!

XD3 0-30, it gets up to +42C summer, -42 winter, I run it in a brand new X-Trail all year round, this oil beats most 10-30 oils in visc. of 12.2 at
100C and pour point of -60F winter.

I will look on BITOG but off hand how does its robustness eg viscosity etc compare with GC?

I know this diesel oil is is rated just fine for gasoline engines but at what point would you consider that a particular engine's oil consumption could cause problems for the cat. converter using such a rated oil?

GC and XD-3 are both high-viscosity 30s at 100c. In many engines that can reduce wear. For some engines that increases fuel consumption somewhat, according to member feedback on this site.

That's one crazy login (no insult intended).
Esso XD-3 0w30 and 0w40 are available in 12 by 1 (12 bottles of 1 litre in one case) and 4 by 4 (4 jugs of 4L. in one case).
To get 0w30, please call 1-800-414-NOCO or 416-201-9900 to make an order. The warehouse is at: 2 Bradpenn Road, Etobicoke, ON. M8Z 5S9. You should locate the warehouse on mapquest.com before going there because it is hard to find. NOCO also supply Mobil 1 products. Total cost for a case of 12 (1 litre bottle) is $56.03. Take care.

Stay away from the 0w20 (too thin) and 0w40 (too thick). Go for the XD3, 0w30, and run it year round.

You didn't state what vehicle you have, but for a Toronto climate you don't need to be switcing between 10w30 and 5w30.

As stated, get the XD3 at the nearest Esso bulk plant. Phone before you go to ensure they have it in stock.

I bought a case in July and it had to be brought from Edmonton to Burnaby, BC as they had none in stock.

If you GTA fellows are looking for another place to get ESSO XD-3 0W40, 15W40, etc. Try Chalmers Fuels Georgetown Ont 905-877-5104, 1-800-268-0194 their open till 5 or 6 pm.

In my wifes 2000 Mazda 626, 4 cyl, 2.0 I use Red Line 5W20. This engine absolutely loves the RL.
My daughters 2004 Mazda Protege with 4 cyl, we run Royal Purple 5W30.
