If CAFE/stringent fuel economy/emissions requirements didn't exist....would 0W-8/16/20 exist?

@TiGeo there should be another spot on that card for "Off-topic 'I use __' anecdote"
STG we could be talking about an additive or comparing euro tests, and a cowboy's gotta throwdown his random soapbox to say he's been running ST high mileage since birth and rebukes the purpose of this site, "stressin and all that"

Question on the continuous required viscosity threads.
The articles and Youtube video's I've seen by I assume experts, all say that oil shears and typically loses one grade if the required viscosity is 20 , wouldn't 30 become a 20 after a couple hundred miles? If it was ever tested after an incident, wouldn't the result come back as a 20?

Oils do not “typically shear”, that is entirely dependent upon the particular oil, the specific engine, and the quality if the VII being used, if any. What we see here most often is fuel dilution which also thins the oil but not by mechanical shear of the VM.

What kind of incident would require testing?
