Idiots that drive with hitch balls attached…

Did you reach out to the mall's security people. They might have video. I have heard of them sharing it, hit in run in a public shopping place is bad for business.
If you intend to do that, do it today.
Large security contractors reuse the tapes over a 24 hour loop if it is an older system

I leave the ball on both of my trucks. I use it all the time on my F-150 and with the Maverick people do not seem to pull up so close at stop signs. I wish I had one on my Corvette hahahaha. I know how to drive and do not back into people's vehicles. I do have sympathy for the OP since I wouldn't be happy if it happened to my vehicle. Plus, I leave my boat 150 miles away near the Missouri River and would probably forget it at one time or another and have to buy a brand new one for an outrageous price in a small town. Keeping mine on both trucks.

JHZR2, you'r close enough to Stoystown Auto Wreckers to drive their to get the part. If no-one around you has it, give them a call, 1800 358 8770. They have one of the largest collection of scrapped vehicles in the entire country. Their yards of vehicle are huge, and well organized. And the way they run their business is also well organized. Several work the customer service and several in the yards verify the vehicke is actually there with what ever parts the customer wants. They seam to have a policy of going out of their way to be friendly and helpful to customers. And if they don't have it, they will even do a search and tell you who does.

When traveling with our camper we leave the hitch in when disconnected bc it weighs about 40-50lbs. Sucks you got backed into but that has nothing to do with your title as that is ignorant to call someone an idiot for a simple accident. It's just stuff, and it can be fixed; they probably had no idea they hit you. But hey keep calling people names for no reason.

It's saved me from 3 or 4 low speed impacts since the start of the year... it stays in but that is due to the particular demographic of people I drive near and their well known neglect for any basic lawful operation of a motor vehicle. If that wasn't part of my commute, it would be stowed in the bed... even though I tow something most days of the week.

It sticks out ~ 3 inches more than it would otherwise (a lot of length for some people I know!) I won't leave the pintle or anything large in though. That's just mean.

An idiot in a parking garage I sometimes have to use has a full size Ram with a front mounted hitch ball that sticks out at least ten inches from the bumper. The dimwit always backs in so the hitch ball is sticking out into the travel lane.

I left the drawbar in on a car once. For one winter. It wasn't coming out for love nor money the following year! Couple years later I finally pulled the whole works and spent at least 45 minutes hammering on it (3lb maul?) to drive the drawbar out. Never left it in after that.

My old house did have Jersey barriers to prevent one from going over the edge (4' drop to the backyard). I guess tapping that with a drawbar would be better than tapping with a bumper. Think I did tap it one time, but only once, didn't feel like testing my luck.
Had the same thing on a 2nd Gen Ram here, and it was extra surprising because we get minimal (nearly zero) rust. But it had been left in for years and was rarely used. Even here if water can hide in small spaces for long periods of time, it'll rust.

Blue wrench, air hammer, BFH, giant sledge....I finally got it to move but it was a workout

Well, the time to learn that being oblivious can sting a little, or a lot, is when they are young... Its a bad habit to walk that close to vehicles anyways. I have have a trunk mount bike rack and people have walked into it as well, but no harm done...
I’ve seen pickup trucks backed in to spots - and the net result is their hitch covers 1/2 the sidewalk.

It may be the pedestrian’s fault for walking into a stationary object, but taking up half the sidewalk for your parking convenience is a real jerk move.

I have a hitch on both my trucks for the idiot that runs into you when your stoped.
It has saved both my trucks and past trucks from damage at least half a dozen times

Had a Chevy Lumina run into the back of my 00 F150, had the trailer hitch in. Put a huge hole in the grill and radiator.. but also two round holes for exhaust pipes and bent hood from the bumper. Still had to get bumper and pipes replaced but guess could of been worse. I always leave mine in but I don't back up to sidewalk or are my trucks long enough to stick out. OP just ran across one of the many idiots on the roads these days.

Yeah, if its a busy sidewalk, then that is a bit of a jerk move. Go park the 20' long rig at the back of the lot. My cars fit quite well in a normal parking spot, even with the bike rack on, so there's no reason to walk close enough to hit it.
I do warn the young guys at the farm supply if the hitch is in, when they are loading grain in to the car. The hitch doesn't quite stick out to be totally obvious, and of course I have banged my shin into it as well, maybe once a decade. So then I remember not to do that..

I think there's a bit of balance between making everything almost totally idiot proof, and people not really paying basic attention, or understanding the realities of fixed metal objects. We shouldn't leave manhole covers off and unmarked, but we can't live in "nerf world" either.

This is a problem at our ball park . I've seen it cause issues for wheelchairs and scooters . You know these high dollar trucks have all sorts of cameras so there is no excuse to back up that far .

It takes no time at all to remove it, and it can easily be stowed away in a tool box. You are more likely to bust your shins on the receiver than you are have your vehicle rescued by it. Mine is always removed once the towing is done. I live in salt country, so mine also stay nice and are not compromised by rust.

In 2021 our 15 Civic got rear ended. Basically, the only damage was the bumper cover. I got a new one from https://paintedautoparts.com/ . I think that was the company and I think it was in Houston. The bumper cover came folded in thirds and the instructions said not to panic and warm it up. I set it in the sun and soon it looked fine. It was an easy install and the color match was very good.

If you need more information, I think I can still find the invoice.
