Right now unit 2 has been 99% defueled and decommissioned. It’s likely going to be a storage area for unit 1 but if demand is there and they rebuild, it probably will only provide for the nearby datacenter and won’t be used for local needs. At least in terms of TMI, it's still under NRC regulation, no matter who owns it, so the same safety standards apply. Would be nice to see the other unit resurrected actually, as maybe an AP1000 or something.
My hope is that nuclear plants get built understanding we are entering an extremely long dry period, for 5% more cost nuclear can be used to desalinate.
Distilled water can be a nearly free byproduct of wasting all this energy, it can be bottled and sold or supliment municipal water sources.
Similar to Europe, Add to this again at a low cost, 3 mile is close enough to housing that hot water could be provided locally reducing the cost to heat water. (My water is 42f most of the winter, sometimes much colder to the point we have requirements to have every faucet drip), processed water is much warmer 20F + more depending on how it’s setup)
It’s worth noting that the states that have private off grid generators loose an immense amount of taxes on said power.
Half my electric bill is taxes in part due to municipal substation taxes paid by the utility , those taxes are lost on private power likely concentrating more taxes to the consumer.
