I quit Castrol, Shell, Halvoline, Phillips 66 etc after 60 years. I read Wikipedia! Now I use the least expensive..any grade that matches my owners manual+upgrades..e.g.ILSAC 6A, DEXRON VI etc except no Supertech since Walmart destroyed rural America and small business. For two years I have been using FVP and NAPA (Valvoline) when on sale. ..my old GM 3.5L v6 loves those oils. Filters? For now..I am paying as needed for WIX/WIX-XPand Purolator ONE and BOSS..I read a lot and I was an algorithm building analyst professional.i have to satisfy myself and my ride.
Your spot on about China mart !

are you doing a long oil change interval?

if so, then yes, amsoil is def worth it.
The value (worth it perspective) is really killed though, even on a really long OCI. For example, I have a (after rebate) bottle of RGT that was $12 for 5qt. I can take that oil 10K miles easy on most engines with a good filter. Then the redline/amsoil person says well I can go 20K miles. Great! But did it cost twice as much to go twice the mileage? or 5 times as much?

i don't know if it cost double or 5x as much.

in bitog we over think everything and want to protect our engines with the "best" oils.

your logic and saving cash makes sense to me. it may not makes sense to someone else. they might need the group 4 or 5 oil.

"it might be worth it?"

sure, it might be worth it if you're doing extended OCI up to 20,000.

im a psycho who changes at 3-5k. the horror!

tldr: is premium oil really worth premium prices for a daily ricer?
You should be able to determine for yourself if something is worth to you or not.
There are two ways looking at the cost of oil or any product to help you decide whether you buy it or not.

1) Intrinsic Value
Final cost of oil taking into account production cost and other associated expenses to make it. If the price seems too high to you and doesn't satisfy your wants and needs, then move on to something cheaper.

1) Subjective Value
Price becomes irrelevant if it satisfies your needs and wants based on your personal feelings and tastes. If that's the case go for it and include Redline and Amsoil on your menu.

Subjective Value
^ This.
For me paying $40 instead of $15 for 4 Qt of oil every 6 months (extra $4/month) is a small cost for my peace of mind. Really negligible.
For someone that makes 500k/year and drives a nice, brand new car, that oil cost is virtually zero. Labor to change the oil will be much more.
For someone that makes the minimum wage, that is indeed a big cost and he need to check the balance the cost/benefit.

Maybe you're correct, perhaps Toyota and Honda are an aberration.

Perhaps I didn't adequately express myself. I am an unapologetic Amsoil user, yes; and I'm not switching. But anyone else, Amsoil or Super tech user should use whatever lets them sleep at night. As has been previously well spoken, the oil one uses is personal choice.
My main purpose for posting on this thread was to encourage the OP. I have done enough UOA to buy a decent used vehicle and become an Amsoil fan. My apologies to the OP for the sideshow, he now probably doesn't feel very good about this forum; He got a :poop: :poop::poop: welcome. As for me, my self esteem is not subject to public opinion, nor do the jesters even know my name. Probably a good thing since I hate Hondas. And Toyota. Never owned a foreign vehicle in my life, and I don't give two cents where their plants are in US, the corporate profits go overseas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_factories I drive American Iron. Back to the OP; if you're concerned about your turbo cooking, be it known that Amsoil SS Protects turbochargers 72% better than required2 by the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification. https://amsoilcontent.com/ams/lit/databulletins/g2880.pdf
It should be common sense that if Amsoil were making false claims, their competitors (Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, etc.) would be happy to sue them into non-existence. OP, be of good cheer. 🍻

Not too much of that in your post.

Now that you that off your chest, tell the OP his question was answered.

My goodness. If you think something is the best thing since sliced bread then just say so. Let it stand at that and let people have a differing opinion if they have one.

I mean if any of us were being honest about the economics of all this, we’d let Jiffy Lube change our oil and spend our time obsessing about home improvement projects to increase the values of our homes. You might save a few grand over a lifetime being obsessive about car maintenance. You build your own sunroom and deck and remodel your kitchen and bathrooms with your own labor, you did a heck of a lot better with your time financially than those of us using that time to send samples off to Blackstone!
Do both! :)
