That's an I6. The 4.9 isn't going to win any races and being a large engine it does use a fair amount of gas, but from a reliability standpoint you really can't do better. It's a great engine for a work truck.
 
Only thing I am going to say about the "new" trucks that you don't like the body style on is that they are a big step up from their predecessors. I am NOT knocking the older style trucks - they are fine for what they are.

How many times do you plan to pull the engine anyways? On a mod motor, you likely won't be. Not sure I'd make that a big part of my arguement against a truck. No idea on the time to do a heater repair. I owned two of that vintage - a '97 and a '99, both with the 4.6, and they were hands down the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. The engines on both were untouched other than the alternator when they were sold with 163,000 and 194,000 miles.

Again, nothing against the older trucks (I wouldn't buy one here because of rust, and that is now starting the apply to the '97-03 models), but some of the arguments against the newer trucks are silly.
