We just had a garage sale at my parents house, and some of my grandfather's old tools were out on the work bench, to include a very old Stanley wood plane. Guy walks up, sees it, and says he'll buy it for 20 bucks. I was like YAY! Never use the darn thing, and 20 bucks for that ol relic? I got to thinking...

Looked it up online and it's worth about 500 bucks.

Now I know; I have 2 more of them and a bunch of old tools, some I still use. Not anymore!

Don't feel too bad. We have all done things that we regret. I had a few too many drinks a long time ago and gave my brother in law a bunch of my Dad's good tools (when he died) and an old model race car made out of metal that was really cool. I also sold most of my guns a long time ago and now I wish I never did. I have bought lots since then but not the guns my Dad gave me of course.

This!

Since you looked it up to see what it is worth I would consider you very SMART.

Agreed.

Some people like to say "live and learn." I prefer to say, if you ain't learnin', you ain't livin'. Sometimes you learn the hard way. Consider yourself better off now than when you started.

Besides, if losing $480 is the worst of your problems, I'd say you're in pretty good shape.

I found an old tool auction site and some of them sold for that much. Heck, some of the old Stanley planes are auctioning for over $1,000.

I might have to head out to Vegas to the Gold and Silver Pawn shop (Pawn stars), get on TV, and sell all the old tools I have!

Whenever I've watched that show the pawn shop low balls everyone and offers 1/8 to at most 1/2 of what it's worth. You could probably get a better price on Craigslist or Ebay and cut out the middleman.

Then see the reality of the situation.

In the last few years I've sold four different vintage Stanley planes on Ebay for around that amount, the most recent was a 602 that I picked up at an estate sale last October. On a 1-10 scale it was probably a 4 and sold for over $400. Is that enough situational reality?

Exactly. Old tools are a real collectors item these days.

Don't beat yourself up over what you did. At least you didn't sell all of the stuff cheap.
I have a fair amount of old tools I have inherited from both my grandfathers. I wish there was a website for finding the values on this stuff. It is really hard to find the exact thing to compare to at times.
