Work Friend is getting one of these econoboxes, just wondering out loud if there are known issues with these particular cars (I know the general Hyundai/Kia worries)

she's early 20's, she and her BF bought a house a few months back, and the other day her ...97? Cavalier finally Died. ( her first car, she bought at used dealership in her hometown when the original owner traded it in, for around $2k cash...she always called people with car payments suckers)
not sure what all broke on Susan( the car's name) but she had to have it towed.
I was sure she would go for another inexpensive used car, but nope. She went to all the mainline dealers in our area, asked them all for their Cheapest new car.
ended up signing a LEASE for a '24 Venue, with the intent to buy after the lease is up in 3 years.

My condolences to Susan. You dont hear much about Venue's. That might be a good thing. My opinion is its uglier in person vs in a photo. Probably the ugliest car sold in the US today but thats my opinion. I believe its the underpowered cousin/twin/sister/brother to a Kia Soul.

It's a bare-bones A-to-B car that will get her where she wants to go. Its 1.6L gamma is relatively trouble-free and should provide good service if maintained.

I guess they stopped making Accents?

Probably a good move with the lease plus buyout, if it turns out to be a turkey.

i found that my wife's 2014 accent was a better driving vehicle than the venue we drove.
And she didn't care for it either.
As stated by eljefino smart to lease if it's a bust she can bail.

I bought a new 2023 Venue Limited a little over a year ago. I'm retired and don't drive a lot anymore...wanted something (relatively) inexpensive with a warranty that would probably outlast me. I love this little car. It's fuel efficient (35 mpg average this time of year with lots of "city" driving), relatively quiet and handles fine. I drove a Nissan Kicks before buying the Venue...the Kicks was really underpowered (with the same engine displacement and power output)...and there's also the warranty difference. The car has all the safety "nannies"...and I like them. I haven't put a lot of miles on it but it has been great...not one issue. I see that there are 2020 models for sale with 90+k miles...so they must be holding up. If you just need basic transportation with a great warranty at a reasonable price it's a great little car.

She became a true sucker for payments signing up for lease.

Upside is she can dump if she hates it although it must be vast improvement from a Cavalier. Or love it and buy it.

talking to her today, after she's already taken possession of the Venue, when they had Susan ( the Cav.) towed, it was to her BF's uncle's shop...
turns out all that wrong with it is the Ignition switch. he took it out for a test drive, it cut out on him while moving, he fiddled with the key, and everything came back...
dunno if they're gonna fix and keep her as a backup, or what. the only other issue with the car is the void of rust and air, where the pass. side Rocker is supposed to be, but that would def. be uneconomical to repair, unless you Personally are handy with a metal, and paint..possibly even then..

the gadgets and gizmos are a bit too much for her...coming from a car with just AM/FM, not even a cassette player, to a modern infotainment with bluetooth and Carplay...

I'd rather get a nissan kicks
I don’t know… my partner has one with 40k miles and every time I drive it I worry if the CVT is gonna go pop. But at least it has a warranty… nice car otherwise in the upper trim he has. At work we also have a Kicks but it’s the base model one and it sucks in comparison. It’s amazing how big of a difference there is between the base Kicks and the nice one.

It only lasted 27 years, sounds like real junk!
actually, i had the year wrong...it's a 92 (facelifted 2nd Gen), so it only lasted 32 years, and retired for just a flaky ignition switch.

They're fine. I had a rental and liked it.
That's funny, I was going to say the opposite as I rented one last month and would safely say it was the worst car I ever rented. Half of it was on me since I didn't realize just how much of a sardine can they are...you get more space in a compact sedan at least in cargo room. I was very cramped and the gas mileage I expected to be better considering the size of the vehicle and the engine. In my opinion it is underpowered to the point of being unsafe. It had a nasty lag on the gas pedal whenever I needed to punch it to shoot a gap in traffic.
