Are these engines hard on oil? Got a '09 Elantra with 46k miles that I'm debating on whether to use synthetic. MMO with a couple short OCI's or just go ahead and make the switch? I've got no idea what oil or intervals were used from the last owner.

Is your car one of the ones that allow 5w30 in the manual in warm temperatures? I do know the older Hyundais from the mid 2000s were hard on oil and PCV valves.

5w-20 preferred, 5w30 allowed above 0 degrees.

I just wikipediaed and found out your Elantra uses the newer beta II engines. As far as oil on those engines go, I heard more complaints about cold starts than high heat so I'd go with synthetic 0w20 or synthetic 5w20 for best results.

Good engine.

Go with the 5W20 Synthetic.

We have owned/own 4 Hyundai vehicles.

Hyundai OEM filters are well made.

I would change out the PCV valve.

We see a wide range of weather conditions here including summer temperatures in the 100 deg range.

No problems with 5W20.

good to know that the mid 2000`s were hard on oil/pcv valves. i`ll have to check my daughters pcv valve when she comes home.

Others on the forum have said the Hyundai Beta II engine you have is pretty easy on oil and isn't too picky about what is used . Go to WM and pick up a 5 qrt. jug of QSUD synthetic 5W 20 to try ...decent synthetic for $19.00 .

My friend's mom's car was the 2005 Elantra and we would see steam/smoke coming out of the oil cap after a lot of highway driving. While it's likely that something like this could happen without causing an engine failure, I'm an overthinking BITOGer so we switched the oil up to a 5w30 synthetic and changed the PCV valve. I wouldn't have used 5w30 if she did a lot of city driving but her driving was more than 90% highway with stretches of 20-30 miles each way so I figured the negative trade-offs were minimized in that case.

well,i`m using gc in it for her. and out of the blue right after i first put it in,she called and said "i dont know what oil you put in,but it sure is smoother, quieter on cold start`s,and peppier" now.
