How would you choose your next car?

No offense but you won't even get remotely close to the mpg's you'll get with a Prius with a Yaris, or Corolla (Yaris 30/38, Corolla 27/34, Prius c 53/46). Before you say that in the real world I regularly beat the EPA estimates with my Corolla, or Yaris so do people who drive a Prius.

There are also just as many Prius owners that complain about the mpgs being significantly lower than posted on the EPA sticker, and you have to drive the Prius a bit differently from a typical diesel or gas only powered car to achieve the rated figures.

Also the price of purchase and ownership is FAR FAR LOWER in the Corolla and Yaris. So those gains in MPG are negated with the Prius.

The Prius is a lifestyle vehicle.

About the only way I get anywhere close to Prius MPG with my Cruze Eco is pussyfooting around at 55 mph watching the instant MPG gauge like a hawk. My car will do low-mid 40's MPG all day long with some spirited driving. Getting high 40's to low 50's MPG needs a bit more finesse. Meanwhile, the Prius driver out to get good MPG's is knocking down mid 50's to low 60's. Trust me, I've tried, and the only way I get 70 mpg in my Cruze is coasting downhill for 1.5 miles! The only way our Fit will break 40 mpg is setting it on a long interstate trip at 60-65 mph. Last time we did that we averaged 42 mpg over 300 miles. Sure, it's decent, but it's still a far cry from what a Prius will achieve at 60 mph on flat land.

I chose my car for a decent blend of MPG and driving dynamics. It's perfect for my uses/wants/present-future needs.

For truth. See my previous comment.

I try to stay 5-10 years behind. Seems the newer a car gets, the more the government has screwed it up(see comments about EGR for mini).

Well, When it is time to change in my Mercury in 4 or 5 years I will probably go with a 2014 impala. I'm partial to big cars. I like to buy cars that are a couple of years old. Of course gas mileage has to be part of the factor. But, to me size, comfort and power are first on my list. Since the new impala is large, should be comfortable, makes 300 horsepower and supposed to get 30 mpg. I guess i'll have to wait and see how they work out.

I run into the opposite issue--around 5-10 years old, the car screws itself up (stuff all worn out).

I dunno. Hate to pay the piper, but on occasion I too like to drive with the window down, and not smell every old vehicle on the road. Harder to diagnose a car by its sounds; but a whole lot easier to try to figure something out going by the trouble codes.

The current Prius's (Prii?) have proven themselves. I wouldn't have an issue buying one, and hoping to get 10 years out of it.

Because it is butt fooking ugly that is why. I would take a cruze any day over something so ugly I would be ashamed to be seen in.

But that is coming from a "car" guy. I could give a rats azzz about mileage. Case in point, I drive an 07 Yukon, 08 GMC 2500HD, 98 K2500, 76 camaro making 600hp and getting 2 to 4mpg and a supercharged 63 nova getting around 6 to 8. If I had a super long commute and really wanted an "econo" car it would be a cruze simply because it is not so sinfully hideous to look at.
