All this talk of saving a dime here, a quarter there on the aggregate cost of an oil change got me thinking. How would one go about making an expensive oil change?

I was thinking 5qts of Redline at $8/qt and an M1 filter for a total of $51 + tax every 3000 miles.

Any takers on this one?

Go to Jiffy Lube and get a full synthetic oil change, way more than $51 and no Mobil 1 filter.

Don't forget to let Jippy Lube sell you some "engine flush" and some "engine oil additive." Just to be safe they can replace your drain plug and washer, if equipped.

I just got a call from a female friend who was quoted $60 for a synth change at J/L. She has a new Jetta 1.8t and the manager declined to do a regular oil service, synth only. He was right.

Don't forget you have to add Schaeffer's #132 moly and lube control to what you already have... CHA-CHING!

Expensive oil change, thats simple. Buy synthetic at regular price and find the place that has it the most expensive. After changing your oil and filter, run the car for about a minute. Then drain it out and change the oil and filter again. Now thats a an expensive oil change for do it yourself. Add to that you buy some expensive towels to wipe your oil and expensive tools. And don't forget to buy a brand new drain plug at oil change. And don't forget to wear a nice tuxedo when you change your oils so that you'll have to take it to dry cleaner. Now thats got to be an expensive oil change. Yeah if you take it to those quick lube places and do synthetic, it is a bit expensive.

I did an oil change on my 1967 Chevy II Nova hardtop coupe a while back, and it was the most expensive I've ever seen.

I had an extended oil pan, so it took 8 quarts of Mobil 1 - back when the stuff was about $5 per quart. I used a Mobil 1 filter, so I was at about $50 right there.

As it turns out, I'd just had the engine built recently and so I mistakenly grabbed the wrong type of small block Chevy filter - some have gaskets on the inner part of the filter and some have the gaskets to the outter part of the filter. I grabbed the one with the inner gasket.

After I finished with the oil change, I fired it up and let it run for a minute or two while I cleaned and put my tools away. When I turned around, the oil had pumped out all over the ground. Basically, I was out the cost of the filter and all of the oil. Not to mention a very nasty cleanup.

Oh, and not too long after that, my $5,000 custom-built 383 cubic inch small block stroker motor snapped a crankshaft with less than 1,000 miles on the engine. You think it had something to do with the oil starvation????

Hahahhaa....

Top that one, suckas!!!

2 off 5 litre jusgs of M1 0W-40, or Castrol FormulaR 0W-40 at $64 each (Leaves a few ltires for next change), and $35 for a filter.

$165. (translates to $119 U.S)

*Use Redline, and it's 7x$30 + $35, or $245 ($175US)

Expensive oil change? How about buying some of that Shell Helix oil that is specified for some Ferraris? Isn't that stuff something like $60 per quart?

I had the VW dealer do my first oil change way back when my car was new. 4 quarts of M1 and a filter............. $62.62. I've been doing it myself ever since.

oh, for pete's sake. no one has mentioned the $30+ dollars added on for an uoa!

there are a lot of us here with expensive oil changes. some guys have cases of oil in the garage, lube control, auto-rx, lifts, creepers, filter wrenches, filters, special cans for used oil, towels, kitty litter, and a bunch of uoa kits in the bottom drawer of your tool box.

now get out there and change that oil!

Don't know a thing about "expensive" oil changes. But I did a $1.99 oil change once: a $1.99 STP filter promotion through Kragen, plus five free quarts of MaxLife through a Valvoline promotion. Me likely $1.99 oil changes! The oil change after that came close at $3.79, using 36 cent Citgo after promotions.

Then, ship the car to Italy and have the dealer do the oil change to really jack up the price.
