How to make an expensive oil change

I'd rather spend the money for good protection instead of being a cheap *** .

Think about it this way, would you spend the money for a good condom, or buy the cheap no name brands? Well gents, this is how your engine feels.

I think I spend about $35 or so on SynPower with a Purolator PureOne filter.

What Patman said or:

Take any non-warranty European car and bring to dealer. eg. BMW for their Inspection I or M-B for Inspection A. They say that they do a whole checklist of items, but what is really going on is a glorified oil change.

BMW $600
M-B $350

$165. (translates to $119 U.S)

*Use Redline, and it's 7x$30 + $35, or $245 ($175US)

I just filled up today. Caltex Vortex (95 octane RON Premium) is now $1.10 per litre.

Step 1: Buy Enzo Ferrari.

Step 2: Drive Enzo to Ferrari Dealer.

Step 3: Mortgage summer house to pay for oil change.

quote:

You see a single quart of the Shell Helix 10W-60 synthetic oil that the Enzo requires sells for $60US/quart and the Enzo requires 12.2 quarts of it each time you take it in (presumably every 5000 miles). 13 qts = 780 USD. That doesn't include the oil filter or any of other service checks that the dealer will perform. I would guess that a full service for that car is around $1300US.

I dont know how much FAF (Ferrari) in Atlanta gets for an oil change but I know they send a covered car carrier to pick up the car in Decatur (200 mi away).

A major service used to run $7,000.00 there on a 512BB (Carb) in the early eighties. Of course that included syncing 6 Dual Throat Carbs, Adjusting 48 Valves, 2 New Distributors, and a New Clutch (required Engine Removal) among other things.

I believe Ferrari Labor Rate (Requires Ferrari Certified Mechanics) is around $160.00 in the Southeast now.

I dunno if other Euro brands have a full-function OBD-II Code Scanner/Module Recode/Data Block Reader tool for PCs, but the Ross-Tech VAG Tool makes Audi/VW Service and control module reprogramming a breeze. Data logging and real-time graphing, kewl.

... As it turns out, I'd just had the engine built recently and so I mistakenly grabbed the wrong type of small block Chevy filter - some have gaskets on the inner part of the filter and some have the gaskets to the outter part of the filter. I grabbed the one with the inner gasket.

After I finished with the oil change, I fired it up and let it run for a minute or two while I cleaned and put my tools away. When I turned around, the oil had pumped out all over the ground. Basically, I was out the cost of the filter and all of the oil. Not to mention a very nasty cleanup.

Oh, and not too long after that, my $5,000 custom-built 383 cubic inch small block stroker motor snapped a crankshaft with less than 1,000 miles on the engine. You think it had something to do with the oil starvation????

I've almost been there ... done that, but on a much smaller scale. Once (and only once!) I left the old filter gasket on the side of the engine when I installed the new filter. My wife started the Pinto later that day, and to her credit, shut it down immediately when the oil pressure gauge failed to rise. (The first thing I did when I bought the car was to replace the "ENGINE" warning light with oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges. The second thing I did was to train my wife to check the gauges frequently and to kill the engine if the oil pressure fell much below 20psi.) I came home from work to find a big puddle of brand new oil on the ground, but no other ill effects.

Well it costs me a little over $55 a oil change with me doing it myself. I think that's enough, and don't even want to think about makeing it more.

I never have figured out why anyone would want to change oil every 3,000 miles because a car dealer recommends it is beyond me, unless the vehicle is operated under extreme dusty dirty conditions. The oil companies love you for short mileage oil changes of no more than 3,000 miles.

All owner's manuals I have seen show 5,000 mile interval oil changes under extreme conditions and 7,500 mile interval for 'normal' conditions.

My mechanic told me he had a customer come in one time with a 911 and ask for an oil change with Redline. He said the customer was pretty upset when the oil change cost $150 (14 quarts of redline + oil filter).
