2 weeks ago I sent out a pair of keys for my future SIL via 2 Day FedEx.ground.

More than 2 weeks later the package is still unaccounted for. From what I was told, the fellow who handles the FedEx packages was new and didn't tag them when they came to the FedEx place where he was going to pick it up.

So it gets taken back to the distribution facility and once again updated with the same number as before. However, now it's been stuck there for 6 days and I can't seem to get a human being anywhere near the package. I also can't get it held for pickup at the distribution facility where it's supposedly at.

Has anyone ever been through anything like this?

A few times, the package is probably gone for good. You can file a claim with FedEx but it probably isn't worth the time and effort. Anytime it has gone off the radar for more than a few days I've never had it reappear.

Unfortunately it happens. But yes, its gone. If it did actually make it back to a distribution center it would have scanned again and you would see that on the record.

I think they owe you $100 plus the original postage cost, unless you paid for additional insurance. You will need to file a claim which will also take forever.

Deal with lost shipments with UPS, Fedex, etc. Hate to break it to you, but they ain't looking for it, even if they tell you they will. Consider it gone.... It might get found by chance in the future and if there's an address label, they'll actually throw it into their package system and it will get delivered, but don't count on this.

I have had parts from Ford that were shipped via FedEx show up literally over a year after they were shipped. Their Memphis facility is a huge black hole, especially for pricey items.

Had an international shipment (can't remember if it was Fedex or DHL (pieces came from Europe where DHL is king)) with 4-5 pieces. Filed a claim for the lost value plus shipping charges and they paid it in full. About 6 months later, they showed up.... All at the same time too, not a random piece or two. I seem to recall looking into it and it looked like they all got rerouted to a facility in Europe and 'lost' temporarily. Pretty sure it was Fedex and they got sent to a (former) TNT Express facility that Fedex bought a few years ago and they didn't know (or care !!) how to process them so they just set them aside.

Ford has these kits for when people put DEF in their diesel and it takes out the whole system. I can't post what we call it here due to language, but its about a $5-6K oopsie just in parts. Anyway these always got lost in Memphis and everyone is convinced that workers were taking them to sell. Or else you would get it and the injectors weren't in the box or the CP4 wasn't in the box.

I know people say that but I just don't think it's practical. I just don't see workers being able to walk out with boxes at all. Now, can it happen with the final delivery drivers ? I won't accuse them of it but it's certainly easier.

Memphis is exactly where they keep telling the wife a package she sent to our grandson in Nashville has been checked into. Then shipped out of only to be told it is checked back into Memphis with zero explanation why or where it may end up next. It has only been within miles of its destination 3-4 times only to NOT get delivered.

I had FedEX deliver a package to a house with the same address number but different street name a few blocks over. You'll have to get ahold of a much higher up to get a refund.

Well, I once had a single box, of 8 total, that went missing, in a big order from an outdoor company.

The company in question had a tracking number for it. FedEx couldn’t find it. The other 7 arrived, no problem.

After a week or two, the company gave me a refund.

I forgot all about it.

About 8 months later, a FedEx box arrived, looking like it had been run over by a truck or two. Banged up, taped everywhere, but intact.

The missing 1 of 8. Son of a gun, never thought I would see it again!

No story behind that. FedEx wouldn’t comment.

So, a lost package may not be gone forever, but either way, my experience does not help the OP at all…

Since it wasn't delivered on time you are entitled to get the money back that you paid FedEx to ship it, regardless of whatever may happen next. That should be an instant "We're sorry, of course here's your money" thing.

Yeah, on principle alone file a claim but consider the package lost.

I like to believe insurance claims and lost packages go into statistics somewhere and if it gets bad enough they'll work to change. I know that's laughable but hope springs eternal.

If they see the majority of people with lost packages don't file insurance claims, it just incentivizes them to be even more careless.

If the OP used a place like Kinko's or now Fedex's own little "stores", I guess the cost could be enough to file a claim, plus you can do it sitting on your couch (online) now. Probably paid $25-30 using retail rates. If a commercial account was used, it's not worth the effort. A small package or envelope with keys in it would cost $10 to ship.

In my job, we deal with this frequently with FraudEx. The conventional wisdom is the smaller and lighter the box/package is the greater the chance it disappears. I did have a scenario where I shipped a 19” spare tire on a rim ground and it got to within approximately 50 miles of intended receiver and it disappeared. I filed a claim, reimbursed the buyer, and luckily about 10 days later it resurfaced and got delivered.

Yeah, unless they damage it and dispose of it or the final driver does something (throws your package plus many others in a dumpster, delivers it to the wrong place, or steals it), they usually get found eventually and if the bar code is scannable (or they can read the # and re-print a label), they'll end up delivering it.

Oh the stories I could tell.

Night time employees heaving things over the fence for someone else to pick up.

Industrial Instrumentation leaving in a lunchbox to be sold on ebay. There not smart enough to realize its all serialized, so easy enough to determine where it was stolen from.

Defects that were supposed to be scrapped but weren't. Only way found out is someone trying to file a bunch of warranty claims.

Nothing surprises me anymore. These were all at the factory level, but if anything the folks working in the DC's are even, shall we say, less reputable.
