How Thin Oil's Kill Your Engine, the Magic Mechanic Show

Always comes down to this - if thin oils actually damaged engines we'd be seeing tons of dead cars on the highways.

And by and large it's the opposite. Cars are more reliable overall, the average age AND mileage of vehicles is going up, and people are keeping cars longer.

None of this would be the case if 0W-8/16/20 oils damaged engines in your average grocery getter sedan/SUV/truck.

I found this today, maybe its already been discussed since its a year old. Not sure what to make of it, what say you?

Thanks!

Amsoil does sell some Hybrid Oil's, 0W-8 and 0W-16. I did not bother to see if this guy was talking about Gas or Hybrid Engines. Is this guy an Amsoil Distributor?

I just found this and don't know this guys history.

What I have seen is Chevy/GM's truck fuel management system turns off 4 out of 8 cylinders when cruising, leading to oil starvation in those cylinders and failed engines.

I've also seen ford vehicles with the same engines in Australia using 5w-30, compared to 5w-20 recommendations in the US.

Not sure what to make of this. I usually go along with OEM, but quality overall has slipped on many products worldwide IMO.

This YouTuber does rants that all come down to his opinion being correct. On the issue of thin oil, his argument is not based on anything other than how he sees it... and I will paraphrase: "Thin oil is too thin to protect and work properly."

I am not engaging in the merits of thick v. thin (although my position is to use the oil suggested in the owners manual.) I am saying that this guy sitting behind a mike does not make any kind of useful argument.

I'd say that after 13 years of being here, you should know better than to listen to YT garbage pontificators about lubes.

And you should also know this topic (thick vs thin lubes) has been discussed ad nauseam, with no clear consensus, and if you don't know what to make of it by now, you probably never will.

Just because you watched something on YT is not a reason, in and of itself, to broadcast it here. If you believe there is merit to the video, then by all means, put some effort into defending it. Or, if you believe it's flawed in the logic, discuss why. Don't just dump this garbage on our doorstep and then ring the bell and run away.

We must setup a gofundme for 4 starving cylinders …

You made it farther than me!!
LOL, it was raining outside, and I wanted to see where he was going with what he was saying, when he said Amsoil 0W-30, I turned the Video off. I did not need to hear anything else because I am using 0W-30 and I am about to go to 5W-30

Save me a little hassle. What did he say about it? I mean I just heard gibberish, but in some engines 0W-30 is fine in place of 0W-20, not that 0W-20 spells ruination.
