How similar are ESP 0w-20 and 0w-30?

I know that both contain esters, gtl, pao. According to Mobil’s product sheet, the 0w-20 flavor has slightly more phosphorus and zinc. Are the other additives pretty similar? I know that 0w-30 has a much higher HTHS.

Didn't know they had GTL in the base. I do know that VW 508.00 is a very tough approval to meet, more so than VW 504.00 IIRC. And the difference between the two is that I will use the 0W-30, but will not the 0W-20 .

The correct answer is that the 0w-20 is green. Haha. I’ve used both in our van. Has the 0w-30 in it now. Don’t notice a difference honestly. I know they target different specs but they seem similar: both are API SL and meet SP engine test requirements.

Both are good oils but one is 50% thicker which usually is the determining factor in which one to use.

That’s me too I have been running ESP 0w-20 in my Civic now for just over 2000 km and I know it’s hard to see very minor changes in fuel consumption but it’s nice knowing that it might just be giving me 0.1 MPG better than my previous oils, which were all ever so slightly thicker (by maybe 0.5 cst at 100c)

You appear to have misinterpreted me. I wasn't saying they should use the 0w30. I was saying that the thickness difference is so great. It usually determines what the person wants to run, whether the 0w20 or 0w30.

Good question @Klutch9 I was thinking of going to switch from the ESP 0W-20 to 0W-30 for my baby Duramax. I wonder if that would be a problem.

No not at all. Your engine generally shows significantly less wear on a 30 grade oil. Check out some of the UOAs on your engine.
