Is it true base oils are odorless? Don't know why I smelled it but this one smells bad. Now I think I have to get a bottle of GTX and compare smells.

Quaker State Q Advanced Full Synthetic smells so sweet, that it is tempting to want to taste it. However Motorcraft synthetic blend smells horrific. Makes no difference in terms of wear. Smell and color have been proven to NOT be indicators of quality.

Most Mobil products stink to me, Supertech included. Sopus products tend to be kind of rank to me too. Motorcraft used to not smell all that bad, maybe they've changed their formula since I used it last.

On contrast, most all other brands have a distinct, likable smell to me. Years before the popularity of internet info, I knew that Mobil manufactured "my" Supertech because of its distinct odor.

I guess the best smelling oil I've ever used was true green GC. I made myself dizzy snorting that junk! I'd like to get ahold of another batch some time.

A topic like this one makes me wonder if a link to a psychiatrist would be appropriate

Different brand of oils definitely have different smells to them. Valvoline Synpower and Mobil 1 smell identical to me. Royal Purple has a smell like no other.....sort`ve a rubbery smell, probably because of all the moly it has? It definitely smells exactly like the moly grease I have. Pennzoil yb has a really strong petroleum smell to it.

Have we found the hew "high"????????? Haha!

GC used to smell like gummy bears ..allegedly.

For old oils ..Sunoco oils stank big time, while QS and Exxon's were "more pleasant" (more pleasant oil smells

Oh thanks I don't have to go buy a bottle. This Formula Shell smells like the smoke from a grass fire.

I love the smell of Mobil 1 ATF (at least when I was buying it a few years ago). It was this wonderful plastic smell.

Last case of Redline D4 ATF I bought had a horribly strong stench. I called Dave at Redline and he checked with the product code and told me that it was okay, just the particular seal conditioner they used.

ULX110 has more moly in it that RP but it smells extremely sweet....dangerous i might add with its sea green coloured oil, makes you wanna drink it. I think its certain addtives make it smell with Diesel spec oils smelling the worst in my opinion....

I do recall some of the plastic smell in Valvoline. Now I have to sniff my different Valvoline brands for PAO. Most likely Maxlife. Thanks

I can vouch for the motorcraft...

Last night I changed the oil on my CVPI. It had MC in there as it was, but the 4200(53weeks!) mile old oil smelled BETTER imo than the new MC 5w30 I was replacing it with.

Mercon V smells horrid to. Same with ATF+4, although +3 is actually quite pleasant.

EDIT: The only oil I think smells fantastic is VP Racing's group 5 ester based oils. I run it in my weedwhackers and lawnmowers. They love it, great durability against extreme heat. It smell is just SOOO good.

Oooooooh. I've never had the pleasure of sniffing Maxlife ATF. May have to crack a bottle at Walmart sometime--why not, everybody else does.
