How my budgie made off

The bird stayed behind when I went on vacation. My parents were checking on him every other day, giving him fresh water, food, cleaning his cage, talking to him. Apparently my mom left he door on the cage open while giving him a piece of banana. When her back was turned, my budgie took off, flew out the unfortunately open door to the porch and landed in the neighbor's juniper tree. After some babbling he took to the air and has not been seen since. This happened two days ago. I have no idea what the window is for retrieving an escaped parakeet alive, but it's not looking good with him all green and an easy target for crows, hawks and probably sparrows. I feel so sorry for the little guy. He's only 5 years old. I have been calling around and been checking with the neighbors, but no luck. Wanted posters are up in a 5 mile radius. I have put water and food on the porch.

The weather is on it's side. I've heard of budgies being returned days later by someone who finds it and reads the lost budgie ad.
We had one dart out a small open window in the 80's.

Oh no, that's terrible! I know how you feel. One time our macaw flew into the forest behind our house and we lost sight of her. We didn't find her until the next morning, but that whole night was agony. Don't give up hope just yet - unless he flies around the house a lot, I would think he'd probably get tired not too far from home.

At least a MacCaw is large and armed and can hold its own. Glad you got her back! Was she in shock?

You ought to watch the 1985 film Turtle Diary with Ben Kingsley and Gena Rowlands. You might learn something.

this is how I feel but then again I'm biased, as I couldn't care less for pets or have any interest in animals, other then chicken for food.

Sorry your bird got out.

Budgies can be a bit fragile.

I think Oz' Prime Minister might be responsible...

I would have been much happier if I hadn't seen the picture.

Good luck finding your Budgie. If he was tame and likes people, he probably went towards people at some point. Hopefully someone took him in and see your wanted posters. Budgies are pretty smart ... I've had quite a few over the years.

Try this.

Take your smartphone and sit on back porch.

Find bird sounds on the net that match your bird.

Sit and play them while enjoying your favorite beverage .

You might call him home.

Good luck.

I need to bleach my eyes now....

Sorry to hear that to the OP.

Day 3. I went for a bike ride a few miles out into the desert this morning. No idea how my bird could survive there for more than a day. I see ravens and jays, raptors, buzzards, and of course roadrunners and an occasional warbler in a sage brush. It's not a suitable habitat for a parkeet. If my little flyaway followed the highway, then he had the benefit of people and towns along the way. Most people wouldn't harm a keet. Someone was wondering about his flying abilities, Despite being caged much of the time, he spends a couple hours outside the cage every day, flying around the family room, and his flying abilities and stamina are great.

My landlord has a conyer.

I despise the thing with the white hot passion of a thousand suns. Whenever it begins its incessant screeching, I dream of killing it with a sledge hammer, and I want to miss the first dozen times, and after I do get it, I'd like to blast a hole in the ground with many rounds from a shotgun, and perhaps then, my anger at its incessant obnoxious screeching, would abate.

However I realize some people enjoy keeping an animal in a cage for their amusement, and can genuinely love it.

A bird in a cage is a crime in my opinion. The human nothing but a disillusioned warden.

I wish your bird luck exploring its new found freedom.

Actually domesticated birds as pets love to be in their cage. All the birds I've ever had have full freedom to come out and move around the house when I'm present ... and they all did.

When they had enough fun outside the cage and hanging out with me, they would go back in and hang out in their cage. And when it was bed time they always went back in their cage. If you've never had a parrot of budgie, you'll never understand it.

The OP's budgie would rather be home in his cage then in a gigantic world he doesn't know.

Is a "budgie" a parakeet? Sounds like budgerigar.
Maybe he's hanging out with this San Francisco group. Good documentary.

Tinker feels safe in his cage. He is however adventurous and attempts cage breaks. He is good at manipulating doors and prone to making mad dashes to freedom. He practically thumbs his beak at me before voluntarily returning to the safety and comfort of his cage. I have to be extra careful when he is in his backyard aviary, because he really doesn't know what's out there. His partner died from a tumor in March. She was over twice his age and he is probably lonely. I was about to give Tinker a new mate, or fellow inmate, depending on your views.
