1999 GMC Safari 74600 KMS Amsoil 10w40 down 1/4 inch on dipstick after 3000 KMS pulling trailer in BC mountains, haven't topped up yet. 1998 Ford Escort 138150 KMS Mobil 1 5w30 doesn't use oil, change filter every 5000 KMS and top up. Usually change oil every 15000 KMS or twice a year. Steve

1997 Ford Aerostar AWD 4.0L 212,000 miles. ZERO oil (as to the naked eye)on 5-7,000 mile changes. I use GC Geez, i wish i could put so many miles so quick. In Southern California...it isn't that hard

'03 Golf TDI, ALH engine code (28k miles). maybe 1/4 quart during 10,000 mile OCI no matter how hard it it driven. This is with Delvac 1 5W-40. '04 Jetta 2.0, AVH engine code (4k miles). The oil has not budged from the full mark despite the engine still breaking in. Not 100% certain on oil type, but factory fill is rumored to be German Castrol which explains why the oil is green.

Interesting! I thought I would see a pattern of consumption with synthetic as opposed to dino, but that isn't so. Alot of you report almost no consumption of oil. Even some of the older vehicles above have virtually no consumption when you would expect it due to age, leakage, etc..

2001 Audi A4 1.8T - M1 0w-40, 5w-30, 0w-30 - no oil consumption between 5K mile OCIs. Even during extensive highway driving with rpms at 3400, it doesn't consume anything.

Amkeer - here's an anecdotal observation and believe me it will generate a ton of hate mail. Sample size is very small. Cars that have started life and gone 100K+ miles on petroleum oil, IN SOME CASES, started to consume oil (at varying rates dependent on engine mfr), no matter what oil was used after this consumption started. ALL cars started early in life (5K-20K miles) on synthetic oil, didn't have any oil consumption later in life. I don't think this is necessarily a wear thing, I think it's a gummy ring thing. I base this hypothesis on three factors: a) the consumption goes down or is eliminated with a rigorous multi bottle AutoRx, super duty cleaning. b) the owners claim they were religious about petro oil changes c) we don't see high metals in many 3K petro OCI's Just throwing this up for discussion.

I think 2 things can account for oil usage: the oil and the engine. Seems obvious, but take this example: My mother-in-laws A6 1995 V6 consumed tons of oil with Mobil DCO and Valvoline, 1q/2000mi. With GC, M1 0w-40 and 15w-40 HDEO, consumption is nill. 1q/5000mi is outstanding in this engine. So in fact, the oil itself is to blame in this case. In a beater that has a bad oiling system and wear, consumption will be high no matter what kind of oil you use. Obviously, in a chug-a-lug car, a super-thick oil would diminish consumption over a high-quality thin synth that works fine in tight engines. Two different issues at play here.

Pablo, The 4-Runner used dino until 63,000 miles then was switched to synth. It seems that some engines consume and some don't even same brand such as andyfish's: Two Civics 1995 Civic 210k miles-Pennzoil 5W30 every 5k no oil consumed 1996 Civic 158k miles-Pennzoil 5W30 every 5k, 1 quart every 2000 miles Another example, my 4-Runner only uses about 150ml at 1000 miles with 85% city driving compared to 240ml of oil with 90% highway miles. Is this fuel dilution masking a consumption issue with the city driving? Some have no noticeable consumption using the vehicle with higher RPM highway driving which you would think would produce consumption.

So far I've used 1.5 qts of Amsoil ASL @ 6k miles. I plan on trying the Amsoil 5w-40 AFL next to hopefully cut it down even more.

1987 Nissan Pathfinder 3.0L - 225K miles. I used M1 10W-30 for the first 220K miles and am using Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 now. Consumption 1 quart in 3000 miles with the Rotella which is the same as it was with the M1. 2000 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L - 65K miles. M1 5W-30 from 22K miles until the last 10K miles. No consumption over 7K-10K change intervals. 1990 Ford Mustang 5.0L. - 84K miles. M1 5W-30 since new. No consumption over 7K-10K change intervals. When I say "no consumption" I mean less than a pint and not enough for me to add any. I consider engines that use much oil to be poorly manufactured or worn... 1992 Toyota Camry 2.2L, 152,200 miles, using Valvoline 10W-30 conventional. Consumes a little oil between 3000-5000 intervals. 2002 VW Jetta GLS 2.0L, 13,600 miles, using Castrol GTX 5W-30 conventional. Consumes oil, about 1 quart per 2000 miles. 3000-5000 intervals. Overall the Camry doesn't really seem to consume much oil at all. But the Jetta does consume noticeable amounts.

2002 camaro 3.8L V6 - on Mobil1 10W-30 1qt/3K; on Maxlife 10W-30 no oil. Brand new car basically, 23K miles on the odo. my old 1999 Toyota 3.4L V6 Prerunner Tacoma = 6 qts in and 1ts out on Valvoline Durablend 5W-30. Perfect engine, no consumption!

47000 miles on Acura 3.5 RL. Has never consumed any oil. Never added a drop of make up oil. 10W30 Mobil 1. 43000 miles on a 2000 LS1 Corvette.
