How much can you bench press?

In my younger days 240 lb. once. I remember spotting for a good friend, he is the strongest person I know. He did 500 lbs. free weights on an old school bench press. I stopped him at 4 reps telling him there was no way I'd be able to get the weight off of him if he couldn't do the fifth rep. LOL
If I had to spot for that guy I would insist he left the clips off so the weight could be dumped if need-be!

It's been a while here, maybe 205 on the bench. With the machine, about 230.

I was in a fitness class once and we were rotating through various stations and one of them was the bench press and some guys were on it earlier so when I got there, I saw some 25's on there and figured it was fine and didn't adjust the weights. The gym had gotten some new weights so they were all the same size as a 45, just thinner with the lower weights and different colors. So anyway I jump in and do a few, but I kept thinking that I must really be getting weak because it seemed more difficult that normal. So I looked afterwards and it turned out those 25's were in kilograms. It was a bit more. That's why sometimes lifting is all mental.

17 years ago...305 lbs was the heaviest single rep I could manage. Not sure I could even do it now. I'm 43 now and I'm still fairly stout (for my age)...but I doubt I could bench anywhere close to what I used to. I'm 6ft and 220 lbs...still can get into 33" waist jeans.

Prior to getting injured, I was big into fitness in the Army. However, I never got that good at bench pressing. I think the most I ever got was 220 lbs. My strength was in my back. I was 5'8" and 165 lbs then.

You're right. I'm making the shift as I don't need the bulk for work anymore but more important is lessening the toll of heavyweights on my joints. Particularly shoulders, hips, and knees, neck. I'd also like to lean out and get to 200-15 over the next few months from the current 230-235  My left knee is shot (no cartlidge left) from a work injury 19 + years ago. I really enjoy heavy hikes in the White Mts, Vermont, Maine, and Adirondaks. Along with the gel shots, less weight should make it more bearable. I will need a knee replacement but looking to prolong that.
Begin taking a basic collagen supplement. I use Neocell with good results, but any will work. My next purchase will be Vital Proteins Collagen Peptide.

I have no idea I basically have never exercised a day in my life. They don’t do anything like that in gym class anymore I know I can lift a good amount if that counts.

Now probably could only get 150lbs up. My current body weight is 190lbs. Have not been to the gym since March when they closed. Been lazy and not done anything on my own. I just can't get motivated on my own here at the house. I do get out and ride my bike about 100 miles a week.

Back in high school, I use to power lift and I got 325lbs in competition. I was able to get 350lbs for five reps before I tore my left pectoral muscle. This was at a bodyweight of 181lbs.

It's called squaring the curve. Basically you work out to stay fit so that you don't have a gradual decline in later life.

My wife has a gym membership and I went as a guess with her yesterday. I could only do 130 pounds. I weighed and measured myself yesterday.
161 pounds naked, 6'2"5/8.

At my strongest I could press 205 pounds on the flat bench 5-6 times... Incline bench press 205 pounds 6 times... Decline bench press 225 pounds 5 times but could have maxed at 245... Military press over head 130 pounds 4-6 times..

Lat pull down I did 215 pounds 4-5 times... Dead lifted 355 pounds... Could have done maybe 375...

All of that at my weight of 170-174 pounds... At 6' 2".

Never did too much maxxing out...

Funny story... A regular guy that came in the gym I was working at came in and pit 315 pounds on the bar... I came over after he did his 8-10 reps... I got up on the platform behind the bench and took a dead lift grip and lifted the 315 pounds quite well and shrugged my shoulders with it... Put it back down... He laughed and said.. " still feel like you can master it huh?"... And I said, " yeah... Felt pretty good".

My friend Nick was pressing 120 pound dumbells in each hand... After he got done I went over to help put them back on the weight rack... I handled the 120 pound dumbell rather well with one hand... Put it back on the rack... Nick was like man... "You handled that good man". I said, "yeah man... Got some diesel in the tank... Even though I am not that big.. got some diesel in the tank".

I started out benching 115.... Felt pretty good getting over 200 pounds... I added 17 pounds of muscle... Went from 157 to 174... Not too shabby.

Last time I actually really maxed, around 275# at bodyweight 205. I dont work max bench much since then, though, but I'd still say 265-275.
