hey guys.

a little info about my engine/setup and driving habits to help me decide what length of time/mileage i should be changing the oil at.

the car is a 95 Acura Integra which is far from stock.

the original 1.8L engine was yanked out in favor of a 2.0L bottom end with a modified B16 cylinder head to fit.

the engine consists of:

forged low compression JE pistons.
forged manley turbo tuff connecting rods.
upgraded valve train and aftermarket "stage 1" camshafts.
custom turbo kit
engine has NO PCV VALVE only a open breather/catch can type of crank case pressure relief.

the engine produces anywhere between 250 to 400whp depending on which gear im in and how much turbo boost pressure im running.

i daily drive the car everywhere. mainly i do short trips back and fourth to work which is only 4km one way. usually during the weekend i hit the highway to visit my GF who lives 75km away. so i get a good 80/20% mix of short trip/highway driving.

i don't drive aggressively at all. rpm's are usually kept under 2500rpm 90% of the time. occasionally i the itch to shred the tires but not very often anymore.

currently im running royal purple 5w30. so far its been in there for about 4 months and i racked up about 4500km on the oil and it's looking a little dirty now.

im thinking of changing it at the 6 month mark which im gonna estimate will have about 5500-6000km.

my main concern is that it could be too long of a time frame for the oil since of the extreme short trips i do most of the time. and the fact that the engine has no PCV valve to suck out some of the condensation from the crankcase.

especially now since it's winter time and the extreme cold temp. the oil rarley ever gets up to any good normal operation temperature in the short driving distance during the week. i think the oil take a beating under these conditions.

does anyone think i should shorten the time/mileage for my OCI? given the fact of the short trips/no pcv valve and high power output of the engine.

thanks in advance.

I would change it at 3,000 miles with dino or use a synthetic oil since you have a turbo and run it 5,000 miles. Any turbo engine should have synthetic oil IMO. If you are having good luck with a 5w30 then why not try GC 0w30? Or of price is an issue PP 5w30? Wait just noticed you are running RP synthetic. I would think 5000 miles would be fine on that oil.

I can only imagine how fun it must be to have 250-400hp in a '95 Integra, it's fun even with just 142! Unfortunately I don't know what to offer you in terms of mileage (kilometer-age? lol) since mine is bone stock. My uneducated opinion would be that your 6 month OCI would probably be fine.

imo, i believe a properly done suspension is more fun than a turbo car, but of course having both would be amazing. add a 22mm rear sway bar and be amazeeeeeeeeeeeed

i would run GC 0-30w in your application OP.

What is "GC" ????

I have figured out what PYB is but what is GC????

I am still a newbie here and sometimes the acronym's drive me crazy!

I second the recommendation for GC. You want to make sure you're using a very stable oil.

Regular Mobil 1 5w-30 would probably be good, too.

I think 6 month OCIs should be fine on either oil, even with lots of short trips.

lui,

I'd get a manuel for your Acura and see what the factory specifies. For sure since you have a turbo a synthetic would be in order. IF your car has some sort of OLM then use a good synthetic and go by the OLM monitor.

Royal Purple is consider to be a good oil on this forum and if you can afford it I'd stay with it. My personal standard is Mobil 1 5W-30 for my two car/truck.

For you I'd compare Royal Purple and Mobil 1 "Extended" and if the rpice is comparable then I'd get the "extended" version and take it to maybe and EASY 6K.

You oil will remain cleaner longer if you have a PCV system that has negative pressure.
The way you have it now, it is only a pressure relief, with no active purging.
There are all sorts of benefits to an active PCV system - from ring sealing to more power, etc..

How long on the oil? Right now, 3,000 seems a good idea.

thanks for the tips guys. im not looking to switch oils. im perfectly happy with RP oil. although during the summer months i will switch up to a slightly heavier (5w40) RP grade of oil for the added oil pressure.

i may somehow install a pcv valve...i need to have a look at how i can plumb it in.

but for now i will stick to my original thought of 6 months or 5000-6000km (about 3200-3700miles?)

I have always played it safe and changed my oil at 3k for dino and 6k for synthetic. If I do go 6k I be sure to use a quality filter.
