I Hate to honk but sometimes you must. You are the second
car at the red light, it turns green and the first guy just
sits there, how long do you wait before honking? Thanks

Us Canadians are a little more patient, I wait about 5 seconds

And even then, I just give the horn a tiny little toot, not a full out blast

here in wichita ks at lest 5 sec i honk at 10 sec. but iam retired so iam not in to big of a hurry most of the time. if some one needs in my lane, i dont mind i let them in. i do that a lot and it seems to not hurt me any. its cheaper than a crash. BUT stay on your side of the road, that will make me mad.

I wait about 8-10 seconds. I like to let them notice it and wonder how long they were sitting there at a GREEN light.

If their head is down like texting-1 sec. If just not paying attention then 2-3 seconds. I hate texters, make-up artists and paper readers..

Don't forget about the guy eating his mcdonalds cheesburger on the way to work.

lol, i really don't keep track, but if it's over 5 seconds I'm definitely gonna give a toot to wake someone up.....

I, too, honk pretty quickly if it looks like they're distracted. Just the quickest honk I can. It's not out of malice, just a gentle nudge, and I figure there's no point in drawing it out.

You have not been in Az long have you? Don't scare the old people too much.

If you really want them to move, start playing loud rap or be-bop music at the light. Invest in bad quality loud bass speakers and point them towards the front.

If it's at a light I know is bad (i.e. stays green only for a short time, then red for another 1/2 hour), I won't wait long; maybe 4-5 seconds tops. I don't suffer fools gladly. I hate the idiots who can't be bothered to pay attention. I'm usually not in a big hurry, but I don't want to idle and sit at a light for half the day just because you're a moron, either.

+1 BUT I might go to 20 seconds if I'm not in a rush.

I live in Chicago and it's the same. If you don't start moving at a good clip within 2 seconds, you're getting honked at.

Do some of realize how unbearably long 5+ seconds is in the context of a traffic light? Seriously, count out one onethousand, two onethousand...... It's an eternity. Some lights near me are only green for about 10 seconds; less even.

2-3 with a following toot is the sweet spot.

Which is more infuriating? The person who cannot resist texting at a red light, or the person who is paying attention, yet still waits until 3 car lengths open up before taking their foot off the brake?

I feel as a driver, it is my duty to pay attention at all times, to respond quickly to moving traffic so that a few more cars, individuals might make it through the light.

But far too many people can't be bothered to show the slightest courtesy here. Some proclaim so with their bumper stickers saying "It's all about me!"
How about the person coming at you who can't be bothered to use a turn signal when you need to make a left.

BOOM!!! Justifiable Homicide.
Pay attention or I'll hunt you down.
Bwahahahahahahahaha

I'm the type to ALWAYS hesitate at the start of a green light, have any of you truly paid attention to just HOW many people run the red light going the other way.

Everytime I have darted off from the light the 2nd it's turned green, I've come close to getting hit broadsided.

So yes, I can be the one people honk at because I'm not going to fly out there the 2nd that light turns green.

That said, I always give the person in front of me several seconds to respond. Sometimes honking at someone not only irritates them, but can actually scare the [censored] out of them leading to an accident.
