I have two 3.5L V6 Toyota engines vehicles with the [censored] cartridge element which I hate.Give me a spin on!I wish there was a conversion kit available.
Anyway,I'm going back to Amsoil 5w30 or maybe German Castrol 0w30 and wonder if I can get 8K to 9K miles on the element filter.Any specific brand like Napa Gold (Wix) better than others?

I think any filer should be good for 8-10K miles. Years ago filters were only chaged evey second oil change. Every filter I have ever cut open had little to no debris in it anyway...

Choose a cartridge filter the same way as a spin on. I use the Pure one on the Fusion but this last oil change I tried the MC cartridge.
The up side to the cartridge filter is that it is so easy to cut apart. My last filter(Pure One)was totally clean inside when I cut it apart. No metal I could see, or ant kind of carbon or sludge deposits.

VWs use their cartridge jobs for 10k and over regularly. If there was an issue, that crowd would be very vocal about it.

Cartridge or spin-on, an oil filter is an oil filter. Honda recommends their oil filters be changed every other oil change. I see no reason at all why you can't go 10K+ on yours. I like the cartridge element filter on my car - with no metal shell to cut off it's very easy to inspect.

I have seen an OEM filter go for 11, 500km. The pleats were distorted and it was quite dark..from the oil.

Since then, we have been changing the WIX at ~5000km, but I honestly think that is too often. I'm going to try a K&N in the G5 to see how that bad boy takes to the ~11,000 km change.

I'd like it too if it was on top of the engine.

Ok,thanks to all who replied.Great points by all and I feel more confident now.For some reason I felt the cartridge filter somehow wasn't as good as a spin on.

I have a cartridge filter on my CX7 and like it. I change it at 6,000-7,000 miles (turbo engine) and it looks new. I see no reason that a good cartridge can't go to ~ 12,000 miles. The real advantage to the cartridge is I get to see before installation and at removal. I need not be concerned that a spin-on has a messed up innards or holes in the media or partially open anti-drain back valve.

How many miles do you do/year? It comes down mostly to fuel enrichment miles/total miles. If the ratio is high ..long filter life. If the ratio is low ..shorter filter life. The warmed miles mostly don't count.

Gary,
Around 12K on the RX and 6K on the ES.Some short trips on the RX but not too many.
A once a year change on the ES and a maybe a 9 month or so on the RX and I always warm up my vehicles. Some say not necessary but I've done that for many years.

If the filter media is darkened, the pores could be clogged with particles too small to see. Maybe somebody needs to do River Rat style flow testing on new and used filters.
